• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Casper and Sophie are ill

Does anyone know how I can disinfect my hands after touching their stuff? From what I've read, the only things that work against coccidiosis are ammonia, steam, and boiling water, none of which seem great for hands. Is soap and water enough...?

Soap and water is pretty good if handwashing is done properly, and maybe disposable paper towels.
Hibiscrub is used as a standard handwash in vets, etc. It's antimicrobial and gentle on skin - it didn't set off my contact dermatitis when I was in a lab and using it every time we entered & left the lab.

Just as an aside, I remember being taught how to hand wash properly by the Matron of a nursing home - which is what I am sure you had to do. Nothing like the quick soap up and rinse we are inclined to do at home.

Hibiscrub does sound just a little bit kinder on your skin than ammonia, steam & boiling water:lol: I like to think soap & water would be enough, I'd be happy to just use that but that's not the same as advocating to someone else

Thank you, Shimmer. I watched some videos on how to properly wash your hands early in the pandemic, so that's what I've doing ever since! I'll look into the Hibiscrub; that sounds very useful.

Just a little bit. Yeah, I've been thinking about it and I think water and soap should work well enough, too, like Shimmer and you said, since even if it might not kill anything, it'll rinse everything off my hands.

So, I have some good news! My mum picked up their medication this afternoon and she talked to the vet, and the vet had said that on Friday she'd done the faecal test with a machine thingy, and it had said there's coccidiosis in it, but she said it hadn't sat well with her, so she'd done the test again herself this morning, without the machine thingy, and she'd only found a single egg, so she said it's really not bad enough to worry about! And it's not bad enough that I'll have to disinfect every single little thing; that just giving their room a good clean will be fine. She said coccidiosis might not even have been what made Casper feel unwell on Friday, but that they might have just found the egg because many rabbits carry coccidosis with them. I really wish I'd known this on Friday. But it was already after closing time when she'd done the machine test on Friday, so I get why she didn't check it herself then. So, I'm really relieved. We're still going to treat Casper and Sophie for a few days, but she said I don't have to worry. When Sophie goes in for her laser therapy tomorrow, she'll take another look at Casper and see how he's doing (so, I guess he'll be going with Sophie after all), but since he's eating well now and behaving normally, I think he'll be fine.

Yes it'd have been nice to know on Friday & save you the worry but its a great update  Maybe you can get them to do home treatments, its got to be worth an ask

That's great news about the test results, it must be such a relief! Plus it's good you won't need to do that intensive clean. I'd hate to have to do that, I'd be paranoid in case I missed a spot!

What a nice update! You must be relieved? Your vet is very thorough to do the test herself. Lucky you.
Sending vibes Casper and Sophie will continue to do well.

Yeah, I forgot to ask my mum to ask them yesterday, but I've just sent them a message, so we'll see what they say! I asked if they have any experience with Pet Remedy, too, as that's supposed to be calming? Might be worth a try, putting some on the carrier, see if that helps them be less stressed...

It really is a big relief! And, yeah, I was so worried about making sure every single little thing was cleaned and nothing forgotten!

Yeah, I definitely am! I really appreciate that the vet wanted to do the test herself again when she wasn't completely comfortable with the machine's answer. That's really nice! And thank you for the vibes, too.

What a great update ! well done your vet, she sounds really thorough. Hope Casper won't mind accompanying Sophie to vets, I'm sure treats will be forthcoming :D hope you can relax a little now

Thank you so much, everyone.

Pets mum, I had plenty of treats for him, but he didn't want any. :(

Yesterday was not a good day for them... In the morning Casper didn't want to eat, and Sophie ate a lot less than usual, too. In the afternoon Casper perked up a bit and by the time the vet checked him over he was fine and was eating hay in the carrier. When he got home he ate reasonably well. That keeps happening, that he doesn't want to eat in the morning, but later in the day gets back to his usual self. I don't know why... The vet said it could be stress, the Baycox, or the coccicdiosis, or a combination of those. This morning most of their veggies from last night are still there, and their Urinary Health sticks, and Casper doesn't want to eat again, and Sophie's not her usual hungry self, either. :(

I'm really sorry your bunnies have been worrying you with their lack of appetite. Did it start after the antibiotics started? Lots of vibes that they feel lots better soon

Thank you, j&b, for being sorry and for the vibes. Yeah, it did, which is why I suspect that's the cause, at least partially. Sophie was absolutely fine before we started it, and Casper was doing much better before that, too. Thankfully, today is the last day of treatment, so hopefully they'll feel better after that. The good news is, though, that Casper has been eating some hay, which is a relief!

Sending lots of vibes, I hope they are doing better again soon
Thank you, Zoobec. :)

Casper's been eating some more hay throughout the day, so that's really good. Sophie's just been sleeping a lot. She dragged a vetbed into her house and made herself comfortable.

I got a Pet Remedy diffuser, hoping it would calm Casper's nerves a bit, but within minutes of plugging it in Sophie has been thumping her feet a lot while sniffing the air and I've developed a headache, so I don't think it's quite a success so far!
