• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Casper and Sophie are ill

Yeah, I'll double check with the vets, but I'm pretty sure it works! I remember now that when Tom and Taz had coccidiosis (because they came from a rescue that, in hindsight, wasn't too great) I steam cleaned everything, too.

Oh, no! [emoji38] Thank you!

Yeah, I like the idea of steam much more than harsh, smelly disinfectants. If you want something to steam clean, feel free to come do Casper and Sophie's room [emoji38] (and everything else in my home, since Casper poops eveywhere [emoji38])

If I lived closer I'd be right round with my vax [emoji38] I love a good deep cleaning session [emoji38][emoji38] it's so satisfying when you're done! I've also got this vax cleaner thing (not steam) but it does carpets and upholstery etc and the dirt it sucks out omg! [emoji38] It's one of my favourite jobs [emoji38][emoji38][emoji38][emoji38] Michael says I'm very strange [emoji38]

Sending loads more vibes for you all! xx

I'm considering moving to the UK to be closer to you and your cleaning supplies. I find cleaning very satisfying, too! It's so nice when everything's all clean! Unfortunately, my ME is so bad these days that my poor mom has to do most of my cleaning. Your vax cleaner thing sounds amazing! I want one!

Thank you!

Sending vibes for Casper and Sophie, hope they are doing OK x
Aw, thank you for the vibes, Orenko. They're doing all right at the moment. Casper's all back to his usual hungry self.

My regular vet is not available OOH and the OOH vet does not usually have a vet who sees rabbits. So I understand why you would rather wait for your regular vet to get proper meds.
Sending vibes for Casper and Sophie.

I'm glad you understand. Wouldn't it be nice if a bunny savvy vet would be available 24/7?

And thank you for the vibes, bunny momma.

Sorry I'm a bit late to this thread - sending millions of vibes for Casper and Sophie. xx
Aw, thank you, too, Craig.

Ahh dearrr I send lots of vibrations for them :( hugss xxx
Thank you for the vibes, too, KCG.

You know, since bunnies can carry coccidiosis with them for a long time only for it to cause symptoms in times of stress, I've been wondering if going along to Sophie's laser therapy appointments is causing Casper too much stress. Having 3 appointments in two weeks didn't work out, so we're back to twice a week again for her treatment, and going to the vet twice a week (since early December) is a lot for an anxious bunny like Casper... I don't know if leaving him at home would be a good idea, though; I don't want their bond to break if Sophie comes back smelling strange. It'd be really nice if the vet could do home visits for Sophie's laser treatment... I don't know if they do that, though, and how much it would cost... Probably a lot. Maybe my mom can ask when she picks up the medication tomorrow. Sophie has her next treatment on Tuesday, so I don't know if Casper should go with her if he's already not feeling too well and his symptoms are sensitive to stress. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Ah yea I completely get that, cleaning is actually such hard work, sometimes atm things are getting left because I just can't, I'm doing it slower than usual atm. That's lovely your mum helps out tho! [emoji7]

What's their bond like? Like would you say it's pretty damn strong? If so I think I'd risk it tbh and leave him home.

Atticus and Clementine love each other lots but their bond is a little tricky sometimes and they've actually had to be rebonded before after they fell out after coming back from the vets [emoji51] so with them, absolutely not. But I've had rabbits before that I have seperated for things like this because their bond was so so close and they just missed each other and was glad when the other was home again. I'd based it very much on their specific relationship. But yea I can imagine that's stressful for him if he he's easily stressed!

Willoughby is like that and I've left him when just dealing with Apricot a few times and he's just been super happy to see her when she got home. I know it's not best practice but I think sometimes you just have to look at your buns and do what's right for them.

I usually only take one rabbit of a set to the vet, unless they all need to be there eg for vaccinations. I've not had an issue with them when they got home. Sometimes they smell a bit different, especially if they had a longer visit, so give them a bit of time just to run around on their own, then let the partner(s) back in if you think there may be issues. If the bond isn't that stable, then it may be best if they travel together, though.

I had a group of 3 related boy guinea pigs that couldn't be split up EVER, or they fought - so taking one out of the hutch meant they all had to be out for even the quickest of procedures. I wouldn't have a trio of boy piggies again - it's a very unstable relationship.

I'm in agreement with Graicee and Shimmer, it would depend on their bond. As yet I've not had issues, had to rebond or even been worried enough to monitor them. Mouse once gave Joey a welcome back from hospital hump (such a kind girl). I'm thinking that although Sophie will smell like she has been somewhere else it should at least be a familiar smell to Casper

Thank you for your replies, Graciee, Shimmer, and j&b. It's really helpful to hear your thoughts and hear about your own experiences. Their bond is not super stable at the moment, really. They love each other, but they also bicker a lot about who's boss. It used to be Sophie, but since her arthritis has gotten worse, Casper's been like, 'Okay, Sophie's not so strong anymore, so I'll be boss,' but Sophie doesn't agree. So, they cuddle a lot, but there's also nipping and chasing from both of them. It's something they'll have to figure out for themselves, I think, but I don't know if it would be wise to split them up for a vet visit and risk escalating their disagreement. You're right, though, j&b, that at least Casper will be familiar with the vet smell that'll be on Sophie. And she wouldn't be gone for a long time, not even an hour, and Casper sleeps in the afternoon, so he might not even notice she's gone, really, but... I don't know if it's worth the risk, but I also don't want to stress him out unnecessarily

Yeah, that makes so much sense that things are getting left and that you're slower at it. Cleaning is hard when you're not feeling well. Even with my mum helping out, things still get left here, too. But, yeah, it's really sweet of her to help me out.

Just wanted to give a little update and say that Casper's been doing well yesterday and today. He's been active and eating like normal, and he had great fun yesterday inspecting everything and following my mum around as she tidied up their room so it'll be easier to clean.
