• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

GI Stasis questions - can there be a blockage if there's poo?

Everything happens at once doesn't it! My car broke down twice in the last week, but eventually I got Piper to our old vet and I'm so glad I did! The x-rays showed her elongated molar hadn't actually grown since last time. The issue was the furthest back upper molar, which had fractured under the gum and was wobbling around. No wonder she was so sore! The offending tooth has been removed and she's on the top end of both painkiller dose ranges, she's been doing so much better with her eating and activity. She's also got a bit fat with all this rich food and treats so were going to have to start a diet when she's fully recovered!

Btw for those curious, the treatment the vet had suggested for the elongated root was that if the tooth wasn't loose enough to remove, they could go up through the jaw bone to burr the end of the root, which would destroy its ability to grow. But it doesn't seem like that will be necessary for Piper for a long time, if ever, as this is super slow growing. Since her first ever x-ray was only last year, and this second one doesn't show growth, she may have had this most of her life.

It is great to hear Piper's issue was identified and addressed and she is doing well.
It sounds like you made the right decision to get her to your old vet.
Well done to you and Piper.

Thanks for sharing what vet meant about elongated root treatment.

Fantastic news about finding Piper's sore wobbly molar! Really hope this means she will feel much better. Good luck with her new diet plan. Chief got a bit podgier when Lillabelle went through stasis as he kept eating all her extra grub we left!

Sending extra vibes for her speedy recovery x

Thanks for the vibes, she has now realised that we are dieting again and is not thrilled, but she is really into her new Timothy hay from The Hay Shed, so that is helping the transition. She's still a bit drooly out of the side where the tooth was, and she's not drinking as much water on her own as I'd like, but nothing I can't handle. Now I'm trying to get back in touch with rescues to find her a friend!

Oh I got some Timothy hay from The Hay Shed recently as our usual supplier was out of stock. Both mine love it too. I have found that since finding a good quality timothy hay their diet was much easier. I just stopped all treats and pellets as I knew they were eating lots of hay. I did get advice from Inspector Morse and Omi to make certain changes. My thread is very long but worth a look at for great tips if you feel you need advice however finding a good quality hay made all the difference. I wish you best of luck with Piper too on her diet and finding her a new friend 😀

My boy was ecstatic when I got him timothy and meadow hay from Haybox. He was so enthusiastic, the best hay EVAH! So I stopped giving him the PaH meadow hay he had eaten before, but now refused. I found a pack of PaH hay the other day which I had forgotten and put a bit in with his straw rather than waste it - and now he refuses the Haybox stuff! He gets bored easily!!

So pleased to hear she is managing ok. Brilliant you're now on the look out for a new friend - good luck with your search

I took her to my local vet to check there wasn't anything terrible going on in her mouth causing her to keep drooling, and there wasn't! She said it's fine to keep on with the painkillers a bit longer since the back molar may actually be growing back in and causing discomfort while it does that.

Funnily enough she hasn't really drooled since that appointment and has been drinking more from her bowls! I guess she wants to avoid being poked anymore...

Thank you everyone for your advice to get us through this period. Hopefully the next thing I post is a bonding log, because I might be picking up a friend on Saturday!!

I can't insert a video but she has been absolutely devouring hay knots lately, here's an action shot before she flings it 😂
