• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lump under skin - middle upper tummy

If it looks like it's going to be a long term issue (rather than something that might go away with treatment or by just leaving it alone), I would get it removed and get him neutered at the same time. Then ask for the sample to go for pathology to find out what it actually is.

I would agree that there's not much point in another FNA. If it's getting bigger, it needs sorting anyway, plus he needs neutering before you look for a companion. Neutering won't be covered by insurance.

If you are getting a referral (rather than just going to a second vet of your own accord), the notes should go across to the specialist so they have all the relevant information to date. They may want to see him or repeat some things before any decison is made on the agreed way forward. You could always ask for a phone / video consutation to discuss it if you want to avoid another long trip.

To be honest I've wanted him neutered for a while but the fear of losing my girl has restricted me from it so this could be the kick up the a** I needed to get it done.
I want the lump removed, I want him neutered so I hope the rabbit Savvy Vet will sort it. There's no point in waiting and waiting for more FNA as theres no guarantee we will even get a good sample and they can just take it out at this point and biopsy it to make sure it's not bad. He doesn't seem bothered by it, he's eating, pooping, molesting so I think if it hurt he wouldn't be flopping on that side or attempting to mate with everything as it's just on his inner leg where he's catching it when thrusting.

I'm happy to pay the neuter off my own back he's already cost me 400 this month so what's another 150 at this point. Obviously I wouldn't look at a mate until this is sorted bc he drives me bonkers molesting my elbow and foot and no other being needs to be submitted to that.

I'll be calling the referral vets first thing Monday and explaining the lump, that I want removal and a possible neuter. My fears with GA and that his health check recently came back fine. They should have the beginning of the referral from my current vets and can reach out. He had a health check Tuesday, aswell as a slight one today when he had his rhdv2 vaccination where she said his lump didn't seem more inflamed.

He's got over himself now from his car ride and jab after his 2 hour sulk and has eaten his greens

Here are some photos of the absolute love of my life

You will also need to check on how many weeks to leave between vaccinations and a general anaesthetic. Rabbits don't cope the same as other pets, so it's usually at least a couple of weeks between procedures to allow for recovery time - which is even more important if you have reason to worry about the GA anyway.

While he's under, ask them to just check his teeth as well - the back ones can only be seen properly when they unconscious, so it's always worth checking if the opportunity arises. They may not be able to do anything that needs doing at that point (dentals are classed as 'dirty' ops and are usually done separately from any open surgery to prevent wound site infection), but it's good to have a full update.

I have been following your thread and hope that all goes well for your cute little lad at the exotics vet. I think your decision to get him referred is the sensible one and will hopefully result in something that is easily treated.

Thank you very much

I noticed about 6 hours in he is reacting now to his vaccine
He isn't hopping as much and seems off balance, he is also refusing to flop or relax on his side
He is still eating a little bit, he comes close then decides against it but he is having a nibble here and there when I'm not around
I've put him in his poop tray and he's nibbled hay and urinated/small wet poops (stress?)
He's not refusing treats
He is fuming with me and is turning his back on me when I approach him

I'm not overly concerned at this stage as he does get stasis very easy, we are well equipped with gas drops, critical care and whatever one they prescribe for pain. Metacam and loxicom I think.

It also seems that the limping can be associated with rvd or whatever vaccinations and there isn't as much research in the UK as usa as its a new vaccine.
I'm gonna monitor him over tonight and tomorrow and if its worrying I'll get him into an emergency vet but honestly I think his day has just gone to sht.

- I got my shoes on
- he went in the crate
- he went in the car
- he went to the vet
- the vet prodded his lump and jabbed him
- he went back in the crate/ car
- the tv spooked him
- people were loud outside
- the Turkeys were loud outside
- I kept trying to feed him
- his paws are wobbly
- he can't flop
- he's in pain from his jab

So I think this is just something we gotta ride out for upto 48 hours like the vet/ online research suggested and if its still awful Monday we going back to the vet.

I deal with stasis with him a lot as anything ruins his gut even just me going back to work on a Monday has him on a food strike so here comes a long weekend

Just to add, he can absolutely run away and kick his feet at me when I go near him or try talk to him so I don't think it's that bad really. He's fine to my partner it's just me he's got an issue with

We have an appointment on the 22nd April. We have to get there via the train. The vet will do a consultation in the am then surgery a little after. I've asked for neutering too.
I am terrified and emotional, I do not want to lose my baby boy

The specialist Vet should be sent full details of your Rabbit’s clinical records, but just to be on the safe side do let him/her know when your Rabbit had the Yurvac vaccination.

I told them over the phone he had the vaccination Saturday so I wanted to wait at least a week
Is there something wrong with the vaccine and my rabbit being put under GA?

Most Rabbit savvy Vets advise leaving 2 weeks between any vaccination and a physiological challenge such as a GA. But in some circumstances this isn’t possible ie should surgery be an emergency rather than elective.

Also it takes 14 days for a full immune response to the vaccine to be established.

Interaction with other medicinal products and other forms of interaction-

No information is available on the safety and efficacy of this vaccine when used with any other veterinary medicinal product. A decision to use this vaccine before or after any other veterinary medicinal product therefore needs to be made on a case by case basis.”

I don't know what to do as I physically can't get time off work to get him to a vet any other time and this is 2 hours away. I had to fight tooth and claw to be able to take him Tuesday. I'll just have to cancel and retry in August and hope it doesn't worsen if that's the case of two weeks.

Dont cancel. Give the Vet a call and discuss the issue. As it states in the data sheet, vaccine safety has not been tested against other vaccines/drugs, but that any decision to administer other vaccines/drugs and when is a decision to be made by the Vet on an individual case basis. I am not veterinary qualified, I can only highlight information freely available online. So you need to take heed of the advice of the specialist Vet who will be able to give you a well qualified opinion and they will make any treatment decisions based on their clinical findings when they examine your Rabbit. They might feel that the risks v benefits scale tips in favour of going ahead with surgery.

I agree and also don't think you should cancel. I can appreciate how anxious you are about your bunny. I would also be anxious, but I wouldn't cancel the appointment.

If I've understood what is planned for 22nd, you will be able to have a full and frank discussion with the exotics vet first, as well as her examination of your bunny. That will enable you to come to a joint decision about your bunny's treatment, before any decision about surgery proceeds on that day.

Thinking of you both.

We have booked him in with probably the best vet in the UK as she has a practice opening next week so his appointment is now on the 24th which is only 2 days short of the 2 week period. This is the vet I wanted him to go to but her current practice was full, I believe everything happens for a reason and an advertisement for her new practice came up the very next day so I enquired and here we are.

i feel a lot more reassured knowing the credentials this vet has and the fact that he can go to her personally for his care. They are also happy to keep him overnight if need be. It's still a train journey away but it's quieter and split up.

I am hoping he is okay until Thursday next week, but he seems fine and happy in himself. He's eating well. This week, he learnt to drink from a water bowl and I'm so proud.

His poops are a little small but I've honestly been giving him treats while crying so I am absolutely to blame and I've banned all treats, he's got some new fresh veg coming in tomorrow and he's begrudgingly on the hay.

I do not feel so apprehensive about his treatment.

If the pre op goes well they're happy for surgery, neuter and teeth check

I mentioned the effect the vaccine had on him and how he went downhill so they are aware, they will be reaching out to my vet now to see his patient record

Thanks for putting up with me and for giving all the advice I've got. I really hope it goes well for him. I've promised myself we will take him to a rescue after hes all healed up and let him pick out a friend, as this is something I've wanted for him for a long time but panicked because of the neutering.

I've no idea how to bond rabbits but that's a problem for another day, but fuzzy is so loved and looked after here it'd be a shame not to share it with a rabbit who has never known love or to be spoilt now we potentially have the opportunity to rescue one (or fifty) additional bunnies
