Lillabelle not eating

We tried your idea on Lillabelle.

Whenever my OH is holding her and I give her anything with a syringe it is straightaway battle mode. Lillabelle's fur sticks up on her head and she looks straight at me ready to have a go.

She just tries to bite the syringe. She is very strong and fast. I try to do it sideways but she turns her head. We have gone through a few 5 mls syringes now. I just think it is safer if we don't give her any meds unless absolutely necessary. So she has no meds now.

Her output is very good. It is slightly smaller than Mischief's and Chief's poops are very good size. She is eating Norfolk nettles, dandelion leaves, fresh herbs and the coarse hay today that I have seen so we are happy. I make sure she doesn't bite it in half and drop it. She seems to be doing well now.

Let's hope her blood test is ok too.

Thank you for your help with Lillabelle🥰

As someone with stubborn bunnies, I often use little bits of apple juice or apple puree to trick my buns into taking meds. Right now I'm dipping the syringe in diluted blueberry juice to convince joey to eat a some critical care. I've never seen any side effects from this, it seems to me that little extra sugar is worth it to get the meds into them, after all isn't that why they love meloxicam?

Anyway someone else may come and say why this is bad for them, but that's my take. I've mentioned that I do this to vets and they've never had a problem with it. Did the vet say why not to use banana? Maybe there's some clinical reason you can't use fruit, or it interacting with Metoclopramide or something? If the vet explicit said no to fruit, you probably need to figure out if there's a medical reason or if it's her personal opinion that you 'shouldn't need to'.

As a suggestion for how to use the apple juice sparingly, I've found that a small amount of pure apple juice at the end of the syringe, followed by the meds, works a lot better than mixing the meds with the AJ first (so suck up the correct dose of meds into the syringe, and then a little AJ into the same syringe, so the bunny tastes the AJ first). And if you think you can get away with it, I do one or two syringes a day with just AJ (I'm talking like 0.2ml) so that that taste isn't always followed up by a bad one in the bunny's memory and you can keep the trickery going longer.

Good luck!
Sorry my last post was directed to this post. Your post was very helpful if she would let me give it to her. Iam leaving syringes for now as she seems to be in good health again 🤞🏻

Thank you for this. I hope I will remember this post next time I have to use a syringe with her. She takes the Metacam ok so maybe apple puree next time? 🤩

In humans stopping metoclopramide immediately can cause withdrawal symptoms if it was used over a long period of time, ie weeks and at high doses. But AFAIK it shouldn’t be a problem if the Rabbit was only on it continuously for a few days. Which I don’t think L has been as mostly she’s refused to swallow it
L had it for 2 weeks approximately at 3 ml every 8 hours.
Then 1 week at 3 ml every 12 hrs.
Then stopped completely.

I hope that won't be too much for her? I will talk to the vet about this.

IMUO it won’t be a problem.

Did you request the printout of the clinical notes from her dental treatment ?

No not yet. I was going to ask the vet herself. I guess I can ask reception.

Sorry struggling with pain since L was ill. Taken it out of me tbh.

Ok I rang vets again but our vet is off ill today so couldn't speak to her about blood test result and she is not due back until Wednesday.

I did get a print out of L's procedure. What did you want to know Inspector Morse? Or I can chat on pm?

L is still eating well and output good.
She is not like 'herself' as in not very feisty now. She came up to me yesterday when I was cleaning their hay off the tray to put fresh down. She used to argue with the dustpan and brush but no she just put her head down for some fuss. Totally changed.

She is much more friendly. Still jumping on the bed but likes strokes much more now. No growling and putting her front paws up. She is so different. I think she actually could trust us more after the syringe feeds. Could that happen so obviously? I worry that she is quieter than before.

It’d be interesting to read what the exact findings were and exactly what was done to correct the problems detected.

I am glad to read L is doing well.
It sounds like L got used to being handled. I had it happen to my bunnies who required a lot of handling too, especially if they had medicam. I felt like their drug dealer!😂
Sending vibes she continues to do well!

Unfortunately her blood test has picked up on some issues with L. I tried to get vet to talk slower but it was 7.20pm so I think she was in a rush to go home.

I am going to try and explain them and I hope to get a print out of the blood test sent to my email as well.

So she explained her haematocrit was slightly low but that is not something she is to worried about with rabbits. She said it means they are feeling under the weather. Her 'cromes'? are very high which could be due to being underweight and the body has no fat stores so it takes it out of the muscle. I'm not sure that is right ☹️ She did mention about anaemia with that. Sorry so confused.

Also there was a mild elevation in something else (white blood count possibly) and she said that could be due to dental disease possibly.

So she has asked us to bring her back in to the vets for a skull x-ray so she can check for root elongation as unfortunately they did not have the right machine for rabbits at the vets in Deal. We are going tomorrow at 8.30am. She wanted it done asap.

I am sure Inspector Morse and plenty of others on RU can make some sense of that and I will get the results printed out tomorrow.

She also said we need to build up her muscles so we are upping the pellets from 20 to 40 for now. She is still slightly underweight at 4.570 kg (her target weight agreed by two vets there as 4.7 kg) and I can feel her spine and ribs quite easily but she has a lovely full tummy. She is eating well always tucking in to veggies, herbs and hay so that is good at least. She is still nervous when my OH goes near as worried about being picked up but otherwise doing well.

So now Lillabelle has got to have another visit to vets due to her blood test.

Lils has to go for a skull x-ray tomorrow as the other vets we went to does not have the right x-ray machine. As this will be a 'small' GA hopefully Lil's will be fine however could she have some more vibes please? Mischief is not going with her as he gets so nervous at the vets plus he is a bit of a bully for the vet nurses! 🤭 (Basically he stamps his feet a lot and growls at them and pounces.)

She is a little quiet still so the vibes will help her feel brave hopefully.
Thank you everybun ❤️

Thank you for your vibes IM and BM. Your endless support and welcome advice helps boost our spirits and Lillabelle is being a little trooper ❤️

I apologise for my late response due to my chronic pain being especially difficult to manage recently which usually happens when either bunny is sick. I am therefore morphined up to my eyeballs so I will try and keep it short.

The vet said Lillabelle was so good on Thursday being handled and they managed to get skull X-rays and bloods without having to sedate her which is fantastic. Vet said she ate most of the veggies and pellets before she was handled for X-rays/bloods but she hardly ate afterwards so she was given an injection of Metoclopramide before we picked her up and the vet advised us to syringe feed her one lot when we got home.

Her skull X-rays showed root elongation in her molars but no abscesses or infection as far as vet could see. The vet has sent these to a London vet which specialises in rabbit dentistry. I was a bit shocked that we would have to take her to London for work done and asked about another vet that specialises in rabbits in Maidstone which is much nearer. She said it depends how bad it is as to whether we could just go to Maidstone or even manage it here in our usual vets. She mentioned that they uses Trinity vets but not whether that is in London or Maidstone. The vet said we will hear on the blood tests in a week and could be up to 2 weeks for the X-rays. At least we get paid on the 8th so hopefully we can afford the travel.

I googled Trinity vets when we got home and there is a Trinity vets in Maidstone but nothing was coming up for London. I will ask the vet when I next speak with her which vet they use in London as it could be nearer Kent or even north London which would be a nightmare for us as we do not drive and have noone who could drive us either. The problem being we would need to get to the vets from the train station and I don't think the tube would be a good idea as so busy, noisy and hot for Lillabelle. So it would mean a taxi from the station so it could cost a fair bit I expect. We will also have to find out if Lillabelle would stay the night at the vets or we can pick her up later in the day. If she is staying over night we would have to stay in London the night as well as it is too far to go home and travel back the next day. If we are staying the night Mischief would have to go to the vets with Lillabelle as he will need feeding and checking up on. We have noone I would trust to look after him or that could stay at ours over night. So it is a bit of a dilemma.

Also we need to work out how to transport Lillabelle and possibly both of them. Even Lillabelle is heavy to carry for long distances as I found out when I had to carry her when we went to the vets a fortnight ago due to my OH having a hip replacement. I have had awful pain in my neck and shoulder keeping me awake at night ever since so I can't do that again. My OH is still not able to carry her far either. We are thinking we could buy a big carrier on wheels like a stroller but they all seem to be made of fabric. Does anybody know of a strong large carrier on wheels we could buy please? Would a strong fabric stroller be safe for them as they do chew although I do doubt they would chew the carrier tbh. They tend to just sit there fast breathing when we put them in a carrier. The huge plus side with a stroller type is that they could be in a carrier together rather than separate carriers as they are at present. The other option is putting her/their carriers on my granddaughter's old pushchair as she no longer uses it. We will ask my daughter to bring it over so we can test out whether the carrier(s) fit safely on it as that could hopefully work for us without spending more money.

I looked up her insurance again as well. She is covered for £2500 a year and it was just renewed in August. It is a life time insurance so she will be covered for this her whole life as the vet did say it will take a few dentals to sort out her root elongation plus I realise she will always be a dental bunny for life most probably. However we have already claimed £1100 for this due to gut stasis and dental so she only has £1400 left for this year. I don't know how much this will cost yet but I imagine it will cost a fair bit? I need to read up on root elongation yet so Idk how it is treated etc but I worry it will take a few dentals to put this right. Yet again it all comes down to money even though they are insured ☹️ I was reading Inspector Morse's post on vet fees the other day and really agree that it is tough for those not earning a good salary to afford to own a pet 😥

I realise L may not have to go to the London vet yet as we haven't got the feedback from the specialist but I do worry about our finances being on benefits plus I like to be prepared. There is some positive on the insurance possibly? It also covers travel and accomodation if she gets referred to another vet up to £300. It does stipulate that it pays a maximum of 25p a mile. Is that just for drivers though I wondered? Does it pay out for public transport used up to 25p a mile as well? I will ring and ask Agria on Monday to find out. At least it should cover us staying at a Travelodge or somewhere else that is cheap-ish overnight 🤞🏻

L is doing well atm. We gave her a syringe feed on Thursday night and she did eat some but she also spat a lot out. She did poop a few after and they were soft and looked and smelt like caecotrophs. Later that night she did poop a few harder poops which were a bit small and softer than usual but we were happy with that. We are keeping them in the pen for now so we can keep an eye on how much she eats and she is always near food. We are also writing what time she eats anything and how much plus we are also writing down any output. This is especially important right now as I am often awake through the night due to pain and my OH is awake normal hours so we can use this log to communicate to each other when we are like passing ships in the night.

She has been eating well including lots of hay and pellets. We are giving her double amount of SS pellets which is around 40. She has some at lunch time and some about 9pm so they are spread out through the day from her veggies meals breakfast and evening and her forage feed at 11pm. We also give her a handful of Readigrass before bed to help to build up her fat stores as she is underweight. We will weigh her tomorrow and will adjust her feeds accordingly. Any advice on the would be greatly appreciated as I know little about rabbits that are underweight and needing to build up muscle. We are starting to encourage her to run up our long hallway when she shows interest but otherwise leaving her to stretch her legs a few times a day on her own. The vet said we need to build up her muscles so she needs exercise but firstly does she need to build up her fat stores?

I can't think of anything else atm to say except she is still eating well and has lots of output both wee and poos. She is alert and runs about and just came up the hall and sat by the kitchen waiting for her treat which today was a large sprig of fresh parsley 🥰

I know I said I would keep it short but I don't feel up to changing it all now so a long post it is 🙄

Just a quick add to my post earlier...Mischief is being very protective to L tonight. He growled at me when I went near her and pushed so he was next to her and between me and L. Also he rarely grooms her being the receiver rather than the giver most days. However he has been grooming her loads and really taking his time. He licks her ear all over (which is shaved as had her bloods taken) thoroughly and also just groomed her back. Last night he was grooming her face for ages as well while she lay there eyes closed blissfully content.

He was looking for her everywhere when she went to the vets which he never usually does. They have a really tight bond which we have been very lucky with being our first bonded pair but not seen this behaviour from Chief before. They are always very loved up but tonight he is being the perfect bf looking after his poorly missus. So cute. I need to get photos but can't be bothered tonight. Now going to chill and try not to fall asleep before bunnies are sorted for the night. I just love them so much ❤️❤️

Just caught up with your latest threads, Lillabelle is so lucky to be in your care, and Mischief is an absolute star looking after her so well. Sending loads of vibes for your girl xx

Thank you for your kind words and vibes. They are out of the pen now and Lillabelle just had 10 SS pellets. She is doing really well ❤

I just spoke to my daughter and she told me the kids are at their dads over Xmas so we won't see them until after New Year. This means we can get their Xmas pressies then so that helps us enormously as we can forget Xmas pretty much and put all our money towards Lillabelle. My daughter has offered us help towards Lillabelle's dental fund as well so we are very grateful for that ❤

Now we can just concentrate on L rather than worrying about Xmas which is a massive relief.

We tried the pushchair but it was extremely heavy. I struggled to bring it out of the porch before it was opened up. The carrier would also be on a slope so that idea is no good. We have decided to just carry her/them. My OH is getting stronger every day and I don't care if my neck and shoulder hurt for a bit after either. So the travel is sorted pretty much. Taxi to train station then train then taxi to the vets. Makes life much simpler.

L is doing fantastic today. I was up all night in pain again so I fed the buns before going to bed. L ate loads of veg almost as good as normal. I have later found out that my OH also fed them breakfast! I forgot to leave a note for him 🤦‍♀️ However my OH said L tucked in to that brekkie as well so that is great news! Plus she has also ate 10 SS pellets as well. We have to be vigilant in case but L is eating well and almost back to usual activities like lying along the lounge room doorway and sitting by the fan watching tv 😊
