• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Could I once again ask for vibes for Mimzy, please? U/D post #37 some results

Thank you all so very much. I am in tears reading these kind messages. Sat in room waiting on Mimzy's labs. Vet doesn't seem as alarmed as I but I'm not going to conclude anything till tests are back. (Very expensive day at any rate. I wonder if weekends are considered overtime now? )

Jane thank you so much. I can feel the Inspector's presence, I truly can. I know even if the worst were to happen he would be there to take my little old man with him. It means so very much, thank you. xxxxx

Praying for you & Mimzy

Well we've been home for a bit now. I've had to tend the other pets, walk dogs, feed cats, etc. Jenna will not leave me alone and is currently giving my arm it's fourth wash.
I know everyone over there is probably abed (or you should be) but I'll update as much as I can. We're still awaiting some results.

I have to say, I am gobsmacked. (I hope I don't throw that term around too much, but truly, I am.)

Overall, the vet seems to think he is in good health for his age. Personally he looks terrible to me but that is because I know how he used to be and I compare that to how he is now. I can see the difference but perhaps my vet does not.

But as far as his professional opinion; he is concerned about Mimzy's kidneys as he's been on daily metacam for 6 years. He actually got a clean catch of urine (well done, Mimzy, you almost aimed for that vial! ) but sadly they didn't have the little plates necessary for a culture so it's going to sit in the refrigerator over the weekend. In the meantime they'll do what's called a 'free' culture, in house, and see if anything starts growing. He is suspicious of at least a bladder infection which we could clear up with abx. (That in itself was such a relief to hear!) He'll be doing other tests I presume to evaluate kidney function, as he took bloods and said Mimzy was excellent about that and his xray. My usually wildly flailing bun sat perfectly still for both. (I know that means he was too terrified to move, but still...at least no frantic bounds off the table.)

Vet checked his eyes and the cataracts are starting to look 'fractured.' No response to the pupils. Vet said that is sometimes the case with a frightened rabbit, but I am not convinced there. Mimzy is just too easily startled and I know it's because he cannot see. Maybe a dim light gets through but that's about all. He knows day and night, basically. I am sad because I hate to think of my little man being blinded by something that if he were younger I would have removed, but I have to keep my focus on the big picture.

The one thing that really took me aback was the films. His vet says his bones look like that of a young bunny! I was shocked because he's had EOA since he was 3 years old, his earlier vet found a hip spur and he is so twisted sideways I was imagining that his spondylosis was calcifying his spine and pulling it to the left. Now we are thinking it is simply due to his tilt. Still no idea why he's favoring his rear left leg (that should be the hip spur) and really leaning on the right (it is rather misshapen) but his long bones look beautiful. They seem totally normal. The spine from a side view is immaculate. I have seen what my OH's spine looks like (he has had lifelong problems with his) and Mimzy's is textbook perfect. No chunks of bone hanging off or crushed under other vertebrae. Quite extraordinary considering how long he's had issues.

As I am typing this though I realize I did not get his nails trimmed as I wanted. *foreheadslap* Argh! What an idiot! I guess I was just so relieved that the vet didn't think he was not long for this world that I clean forgot about asking for that. But I can trim them, I'll just need help sighting the quicks, and there's always the possibility that he'll need further diagnostics by next week so I can always take him back then.

As usual, he was indignant that we had hauled him all the way to town and back and was furiously chewing his bedding, wee'd all over it in the first five minutes, and was tossing his freezer pod about in disgust. I guess I can be glad of bunnitude, he has plenty to spare yet and that tells me he may not be too far gone barring something tragic showing up in his labs.

He has lost a little weight though. That and his smaller poos seem to indicate dental time to me, and if there's nothing untoward in his blood panel, I may ask the vet to trim his molars up because that's the only reason I can think of for him not really being that hungry and drinking all that water. His bladder was so full it looked like a water balloon and that was after giving his sample too! I think he's keeping it all in his wooden leg!

I just went out in our yard and picked the only 4 wild strawberries I could find in our patch for him. Normally he turns his nose up, but today he ate them! :) I feel like I have made up a bit for dragging him about today.

So...yeah...I don't know when I'll hear back on the labs. Dr. is relatively good about phoning, but I have seen them overbooking that poor man so much lately and the parking lot was packed when I got there this morning, and that is with the Golden Days celebration starting up today in town. He is in tomorrow and Monday so I know he'll get back to me when he can. Fingers crossed that Mimzy just has an infection because there was no sign of a stone, thank God.

Thank you all so very much for your kind thoughts and vibes. Had it been a different kind of day today I would've been hard to console, but knowing you all are here makes things so very much better. Bless you all. xxxxx

I am so relieved to read that things are not as bad as you feared. Mimzy's made of strong stuff !! I hope that you wont have to wait to long for his lab results.

Phew, I can breathe a bit easier now ! I am sure you must have been terrified of what news the consultation would bring. But Mimzy is determined not to give up without a fight. Rather like another Bun we knew/know dont you think..........................

I wholeheartedly agree, Jane. :) He is taking after someone we know well and love.
I am sorry to have worried you as well. You have enough on your plate my dear!

I'm kind of holding my breath till I hear from the vet. He did not call this evening, so he must have been terribly busy or the results are not in yet. I am very interested in what the bloods will say. That sludge last night had me pretty much sleepless. I can only imagine how uncomfortable Mimzy must be. :( But he's sure drinking a good amount of water, so I don't know how he's winding up like this. Could his hay or his greens be the problem? I know timothy hay tends to give Pip sludge so I wonder if Mimzy is now having the same problem? Hard to find a hay that he will consistently eat though. :?

For now, I am glad he is still with me. My son is of a different opinion, but I have to give him some leniency because he is not in a good place at the moment. But it does add to the stress when you're arguing with close family about someone or something you love dearly.

About to go and clean out the bunnies and get ready for an early night tonight, or at least a nap till the Archer's Omnibus comes on! :thumb:

I'm so glad the news was better than you had feared, fingers crossed for the other results xx

A really positive update, all paws crossed here for a good update from vet. Gentle nose rubs for Mimzy and big hug for you xxxx

So I should update this with the latest results:
I got a call last night from the vet who saw Mimzy. He says all the bloodwork came back clear. We are still waiting on the urinalysis, but preliminary results from a swab show that he might have an infection, but they need to perform the full culture to be certain. Apparently there's enough debris in his urine that it was hard to tell what was what otherwise. :(

If there is no infection, we have to assume that his eating difficulty is due to his teeth (which I'm fairly sure is what we're going to find) and he'll need to be scheduled for a dental sharpish. His vet is not going to be on the calendar for most of August and barring serious complications we will probably be moving out of state any later than that. Right now I am having a very hard time getting flight arrangements for the animals sussed. The connector we were going to take so we wouldn't have to drive for hours after arriving in the northern part of Oregon doesn't take animals, so OH is not happy about the idea of having to make a twelve hour round trip to bring us back to the new house.

Honestly, some things have to be so complicated for no reason. It shouldn't be this difficult to get your beloved pets from one place to another. :(

Well it's good news that the blood tests are OK and if he does have a UTI hopefully that can be relatively easily treated.

Obviously if he needs a Dental it wont be great given the timing re the move etc. So I can understand your concerns about that. I am sure getting all the travel arrangements in place must be extremely stressful. I know how hard it could be when I had to try to sort out flights for my previous dog (and me!!).

As I have said before, I feel sure that getting the move over and done with will be something of a relief. No, it wont resolve everything. But it will be one less thing to have to worry about.

Sending more hugs xx

Sorry about all the complications with your travel plans.

I know it can be hard to see them age. But these old bun can surprise us. And probably the vets too. They are probably not accustomed to seeing many senior rabbit patients (though that is changing). So do give some credit to yourself that his health is considered good. He has had some challenges over the years and you're a big part of the reason he has come through them and reached age 9+.

I hope you hear soon in regard to what's going on with his urinary system.
