Hes still a bit weird?

Srry forgot to come back on lol got a bit side tracked. Took him to vet and he checked him. Nothing I explained what's happened he's said it sounds like he just doesn't like the food that he's on now and prefered the one before.

So I guess im switching him back the oregano pellets until he gets feed up of them. Charged me 20 quid.

Did he check bunny's teeth? bear in mind that sometimes it's impossible to see dental problems unless the bun is under a GA as they tend to move their tongues about a lot when vets are examining the teeth. If he doesn't go for the old food then a dental check under GA would be my next move.

£20 isn't bad, if I go to the vets closest to me it's £27 to be seen with a rabbit before they even do anything.

He tried looking didn't see much though scooter wudnt sit still lol.

Got him some goodies before I had to leave. Got some sticks apple birch and can remeber the all the where part of a pack from pets at home. Got some alphalfa and some herbs as well.

Did he use that instrument for looking at the teeth? If he's a bunny-savvy vet he should have been able to keep Scooter still, with your help.

I had a dental bun. My mum and I used to manage to check at least his front couple of rows of teeth ourselves by wrapping him a towel and holding him firmly.

I don't think your vet sounds very rabbit-savvy. :?

My dental bun, was a RUBBISH hay eater and very picky with food, but back then we didn't know that there was a link. Had we known, we would have done something about it. He ended up costing a fortune in vets fees and in later life lived on mushed up dried food because he had lots of teeth removed.

I think (someone will give you more information) some of the hay companies will send out sample packs of different hays for him to try.

It does sound dental to me. Schumi would get much more fussy when his teeth were sore.

I'm glad you got him checked out.

If a vet is rabbit savvy they will use a little tool. It looks like a little tube and its attached to a light so the vet can see into the rabbits mouths. Pierre is quite good with it but Bernie will chew on it and gets her tongue in the way. The vet will be patient to ensure the teeth are checked properly.

You need to monitor scooter now and check on his eating. I know you said that you are going away, but when you come back as another poster has said see if you can get different types of hay and swop them all around so he eats what he needs and likes.

It may be worth in the future to get a GA and get his teeth checked properly, maybe even have an x-ray to check the roots.

Also they look like good panels. Mine are a little different, the door is a bit bigger but then we aren't using them for puppies really. I also bought an offcut of carpet which was £10.00, really cheap and I placed that over my own carpet. I then use blankets, couple of pound from asda, and use them over the carpet to stop them eating what they shouldn't.

I would provide Scooter with some bark, bark tunnel or sticks so he can chew on those.

I always feel like I've been robbed when a vet tells me what I already know, because this usually takes about 5 minutes for £20. £240 an hour seems pretty tidy wage to me. However, better to be safe than sorry and all that jazz.

I really just need to make friends with a vet, mates rates. That's the pet owners dream.

Staff and facilities are not free. ;)

Lol, no, I realise that. I just compare it to my job, and if someone comes to me with a problem and I can fix it within 5 minutes for example, I would feel a cheek charging them anything.
Apparently my views on wages aren't very popular though, I suppose this is a world where footballs earn more than nurses, firemen, soldiers, policemen etc etc so I dunno why I'm surprised! Ho hum.

TBH my vet has waived the cost for me in the past on more than one occasion. :thumb:

Ah see, that's brilliant I think.!
I just think sometimes people are put off taking their animals to the vets because of the costs.

Then they shouldn't have pets in the first place! It's a necessity in pet ownership. Too many people take on animals without thinking it through and the animal suffers because they can't be bothered to spend the money. It's terrible.

(This isn't aimed at anyone on this thread or forum, more the chavvy scum on my facebook who get a puppy on a whim and leave it to suffer )

I always try and get a few things done in one go, for example if I ask for a general health check and for the otterscope (sp?) to be used to check teeth at the same time as the vaccination, they only charge for the vaccination. I also dislike paying £25 just for 5 mins to say there is nothing wrong.
My last trip to the vet cost me £157 for 7 rabbits to have full health checks, nails trimmed, all weighed and vaccinated with the combi vac. I thought that was quite a bargain. I actually drove the buns back to my vet in hull for it because the ones in grimsby wanted to charge me £196 just for the vaccinations without anything else and that was with a multi rabbit discount.

Sometimes life isn't so simple! If I lost my job, I'd be heart broken at having give my animals up. People's circumstances change for various reasons. The world isn't as black and white as you suggest I'm afraid, it's not always about people 'not being bothered' to spend the money.

£157 for that is a great price!! Worth the drive for that! I wonder why vets prices vary so much, is it a geographical thing or simply just prices the individual practises decide on?

I think it depends on their costs as well, a larger vet practice will have more overheads and need to charge more to pay nurses, receptionists, electricity bills etc. also some vets have specialist equipment or wards that need to be paid off. Also, my vet is open for regular appointments at the weekend, so they charge a but more over every appointment t cover the cost of extra staffing etc. I do think though that vet practices with good reputations do charge a bit more simply because they are more sought after - but why shouldn't they? After all they have a good reputation due to good staff, and to keep employing the best of the best they need to pay the best wage! I have had some experience with 'budget' vets and I have to say, I will always pay that extra for peace of mind....even though I'm broke

That's a bit of a different situation to what yaretzi is referring to. I think she is referring to people on facebook who are actively seeking pets when they have no or very little money. I see this happen a lot of facebook as well, people will post ads asking for free or cheap puppies/kittens and will fully admit to the fact they can't afford to pay much for them. Of course then it's only the more irresonsible backyard breeders that will consider selling/homing to these people and as a result the animal they take certainly won't have been bred for health so is more likely to end up needing a vet at some point.

Someone I know was an unfortunate case in point. She decided he needed a pet despite being on the dole ad having no savings, we encouraged her to visit a rescue but of course this advice was ignored. She ended up with a kitten from a woman who sold it to her for £10 but all the care she'd taken was to allow her unspayed female cat out to get pregnant with any tom. Our friend had the kitten for 3 months or before it started to look off colour one day then suddenly it had a fit. Our friend has no transport so couldn't get to a vet easily and even if she had managed to do so before the cat died she'd never been been able to afford treatment and would have had to borrow money from somewhere as she has no credit card either. Rather mercifully the cat passed away very quickly after beginning to fit. On speaking to the "breeder" it turned out that mummy cat had heart problems and our friends cat was the longest surviving of the 4 kittens born in that litter.

Problem is animals can and do become ill and it's a bit different taking an animal on knowing full well you can't afford treatment if it needed it than someone who obtained a pet when they were financially stable and are now falling on hard times. :) Sorry for the rant.
