• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vaccinations

I just use a squirt of bleach and a squirt of washing up liquid in a bowl of warm water for all the animal cleaning (hutches, trays, bowls, etc). Air dry if you can, preferably in direct sunlight for additional disinfection by UV.
thanks for that :)

I use a 50/50 mix. Although I haven't had him right through a summer yet, so I will have to be watchful if the weather gets warm. I don't want flystrike! I'm hoping that continuing the way we are, daily cleaning and vinegar and water, will keep him safe.

Murphy booked for vaccination on Wednesday afternoon, thanks for the wisdom you guys. Pet plan too and insurance... blinking heck even Im not insured... My Bun is more important than me! 😁 🐇

Murphy had his vaccination today, but was quite an ordeal...Ive had him for a week and a half so he's been used to a quiet apartment with just me talking and the radio playing quietly in the background. walked into vets with him in my pet carrier and two of the most vocal terriers scared the bejesus out of him... i even asked if i could wait outside. fortunately the dog ower could see i was in a bit of distress and in "concerned protective bun mom zone" and offerered to wait outside with his dogs. i did thank him a lot, it was nice for him to do that.
Anyway, came back and Murphy was behaving a lot differently, he went to a part of his room that he doesnt usually go to, because I havn.t put anything there, and he just stared at the wall all hunched up. I kinda thought of leaving him be, because he had a stressful ordeal and any possible side effects of the vaccintion, but after half an hour i was thinking he really hasnt had any water for an hour, so coaxed him out and fortunately he's now running around, drinking, eating hay, going to loo and doing jumps and im so relieved. The vet mentioned that he was "tiny" but I asked if his weight was ok and she said yes. I have to take him back in 4 months because apparently my boy Murphy may actually be a girl (!) the vet said she would be able to tell on my next visit, so thats a abit of a shock.. the breeder was adamant he was a boy.... in 4 months time I may have to rethink the name "Murphy" lol.... a guy who was in the waiting room suggested "Murphetta".... um no, i dont think so :-Dseagrass.jpg
I bought a seagrass house for him yesterday, so once he seemed back to his normal self, we unwrapped it together tonight... he likes it!

I wouldn't worry about the name. I've got a boy bunny called Betty :) . He doesn't care, and he was called Betty when I got him - and he was an adult, but must have been neutered in a previous home - so it was much less obvious. I tried changing it to Bertie, but it just wouldn't stick.

Are you sure the Vet did not say to come back in 4 weeks not 4 months ?I would be concerned about how Rabbit Savvy the Vet is if they cannot tell the gender of a Rabbit until the Rabbit is about 6 months of age.
If Murphy is a Doe it will be very important to have her spayed. 80% of entire Does develop uterine adenocarcinoma by the age of 5. My Vet has seen cases of the cancer in Does under the age of 3.

The same happened to me - but in reverse. Prince came to us because a family member was looking to rehome him. He was 3 and a half and called Queenie! You guessed it - the breeder and the vet both confirmed he was a she, breeder at 8 weeks and vet at 4 months. The vet I took him to offered to change his name as we hadn't had him long, but all I could think of was "Kingy". I didn't like that so settled for Prince. When my daughter came home from work she was laughing and said "All I could think of Mum was "Prince, the rabbit formerly known as Queenie"
By now, he is an obvious "he" and we still loves him lots!

When Price came home from the vets after his vaccs he "sulked" for ages, turned his back on us and wouldn't eat, jus kept furiously licking and cleaning himself all over. At this point he was only just getting used to being handled and stroked etc. so I was really worried. After he did his cleaning he decided to forgive us and let us feed him a treat and he has never looked back.

The vet definitely said a return visit in 4 months time because she stipulated that he/she would need a check-up at 6 months. I will phone up the vets and ask about spaying.

Yes, sounds similar to what happened with Murphy last night, he just kept running away and turning his back on me. I was concerned because I know he needed to have some water and his hay, but he's absolutely fine this morning and jumping about and nuzzling and licking me so it seems Ive been forgiven for his ordeal!
