Morning Jane

Sad to report since my last post, for the past few days I haven't seen ANY bunnies in the fields out back. I had a favourite little golden bunny I've been keeping a special lookout for, and I haven't seen him at all.

Saw three babies in the field by the local stables yesterday. Just have to hope that the previously well established colony can survive x

This morning I had to force myself to actually TALK with Five people. More than I normally cope with doing in a week. But I managed to achieve this

Yes, I am blowing my own trumpet as I am proud of myself for not allowing my MH issues get in the way as they almost always do. I may have had to take some meds when I got home, but still.................

Oh and this is a pic of the back of my car

Well done, Jane, that's a huge achievement. I hope all the interactions were pleasant, which in turn will have been good for you as well as the cause.

Brilliant we’ll done [emoji846]. You will certainly have saved some bunnies lives

No, but only the Volunteer in the Blue Cross Shop had heard of RHD2. None of the Petshop Owners had.

That's dreadful that they hadn't heard of it, but it also makes what you've done even more worthwhile as hopefully they will now mention it to new rabbit owners.

They said that they would tell any customer buying things for Rabbits to look at the poster x

Gah, today's episode of 'The People's Vet' on CH5 featured a Bunny (Mittens) who that morning lost his partner to 'sudden death'. The consult was USELESS, no mention of Vaccination status. No information given re RHD1/2. No discussion about diet, general husbandry etc. Then Vet goes on to say how they have seen ' quite a few sudden deaths in Rabbits recently' (should that in itself not ring alarm bells........) and that 'sometimes these things just happen and that it could be congenital'. Only advice given was to worm the Bunny regularly. Not for what or what with.

The owners had thought that Mittens was a girl but the Vet said that 'she' is a boy. I would not take that as Gospel.

I just hope that the consult was heavily edited and not as bad as it seemed

Rant over...............................

Oh dear, that it worrying but honestly not surprising to me. Being born and bred in Liverpool, and having worked with animals for a long time here, in my personal experience animal welfare and knowledge in general is... not the best. We have a few fantastic rabbit-savvy vets but they are very few and far between. The thing that worries me is looking at Liverpool on the RHD2 map and seeing that it's very bare, which I'm assuming means that people are not reporting any suspicious deaths which, again, I'm actually not surprised by. It's both sad and terrifying :(

The online reports and the RHD2 Map are only the tip of the iceberg really. I would think it to be the minority of Rabbit owners who would report a sudden death to a Vet, let alone opt for a PM. But when someone like the owner in today's 'The People's Vets' programme did actually take her remaining Bunny to a Vet just hours after finding her other Bunny dead I would have hoped that the Vet may have been a lot more thorough. As I previously posted, I just hope the consult fell victim to heavy handed editing.

Reported via Ros Lamb of the RWAF 20 minutes ago

''Doncaster, DN4, a householder has phoned to say that wild rabbits in her garden and in the area are suffering from Myxomatosis. The RSPCA has taken one to a vet for PTS so far but there is now another one with obvious symptoms. The householder is trying to catch it to also take to a vet.''
