• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Spayed female lactating

One of my rabbits Evie, who is 9 years old and a Netherland dwarf is producing milk.
She has seen a vet, who says it is better not to use hormones on a rabbit. She is otherwise presenting as normal health wise.
However my rabbit is not herself, she is hiding herself away and I don’t know what to do.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
Obviously I wouldn’t do anything invasive as she’s fairly old. She is fairly small, she is eating and drinking, poop is normal. Nice soft tummy, teeth have been checked. Vet is a rabbit savvy experienced vet.
My rabbit is not ok - I just know.
Any experiences of this out there? Please don’t tell me to see another vet. My vet knows her stuffs thanks.

Has the Vet mentioned the possibility of an adrenal gland problem ? Adrenal Gland Hyperplasia? This can cause various hormonal type symptoms in neutered Rabbits. I have had Rabbits who have been prescribed hormone treatment to address Adrenal Gland Hyperplasia. They were given a hormone implant called Suprelorin.

Hello, thanks for your input.
I think I will maybe contact my vet and state that my rabbit is not happy. Ask the question about Adrenal Gland Hyperplasia.
I’m really not happy to leave her the way she is there is something going on with her:
I mean she was spayed when she was about a year. It’s very strange.

Are you sure she was spayed? I ask because some people on this forum were told a rabbit was spayed by the prior owner when the rabbit was intact.
You mention her tummy is soft. Are you able to express milk from your rabbit?
Long ago I had an intact female (before I knew risks) who produced milk at a similar age to your bunny. She got engorged and was uncomfortable.

Sending vibes you and your vet can find a diagnosis and treatment.

Yes my bunny is spayed I paid for it and saw the incision.
Yes she is producing milk. I have gently removed it to stop her being uncomfortable. I bloody remember it myself!
I have had no bother with her being ill in 9 years other than a respiratory infection last Christmas which is fully cleared. She’s always been very healthy.
Vet also said the ovaries can grow back if any amount is left.
I might see if I can get metacam and see if she perks up you know. Then I’d know it was pain making her behave different and I could go from there. I’m gonna ask if bloodwork would help as well. I’m gonna try get to talk to a vet today.

If she has ovarian remnant syndrome I think she would have had some symptoms long ago. Unless the ovarian tissue remaining has recently undergone cellular changes. Which could be indicative of a more serious problem

Personally I would request a full blood work up including hormone profile. Some biochemistry abnormalities can be indicative of a malignancy.

You could ask the Vet if she can have Galastop

It is good to know she was spayed. I am sure she was glad you gently relieved her of her discomfort. Was she lactating from a specific area or in multiple areas? Does she have any lumps?
