• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rear left leg issue

scatter

Alpha Buck
One of my Dutch buns, Lia has developed a weak rear left leg. It seems to have been coming on for a while now I think about it as she seems to catch her foot on the hutch as she hops in and out (they live in our living room). It is only the one leg and she is eating/drinking/pooping/grooming normally. I am seeing my exotics vet tomorrow afternoon as he’s not in today and I really don’t trust anyone else. I did wonder about EC, but she’s behaving normally in every other way. When she runs, it just seems hard for her as it appears to be ‘weak’.

It is quite pronounced today and a little bit yesterday.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Could be a spinal issue, a bulging vertebrae causing compression of the spinal cord. It could be arthritis.

I would check for sore hocks and a gunky ear on the side f the weak hind leg. Hind leg weakness of any kind can lead to the development of sore hocks and gunky ears occur when the Rabbit cannot scratch their ear during grooming.

Hope the Exotics Vet can help.

Thank you 😊 x

Sending vibes the vet can diagnose and start treatment.

Thank you - he’s started her on 10 days of metacam and confined to cage which I feel awful about and feel that I can feel her glaring at me (especially when her sister is running around binkying 😬)
