• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit Depression

Very sorry for your losses 😢

Were your Rabbits up to date with their vaccinations ?

Top of the list of possible causes of ‘sudden death‘ is RVHD (Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease). The Flystrike that your first Rabbit had could have been secondary to him having RVHD.

Was your second Rabbit passing normal faeces prior to death? Was he eating for himself?

You say the second Rabbit had ‘some injections’ given by the Vet on the first visit there last week. What were the injections?

The only way to have a chance of finding out cause of death would be for a post mortem to be carried out.

Unless you can be certain RVHD was not involved then you should destroy all accommodation the Rabbits lived in, the Rabbits must be cremated, not buried and you should not obtain any more Rabbits for at least 4 months.

I'm so sorry that you've lost both your bunnies

Regarding your question about whether it could have been depression with your second bunny, I would say possible, but in my view extremely unlikely. In my experience a bunny left behind after it's bonded partner has died is very often quite withdrawn and will also exhibit signs of grieving. Usually this doesn't become so severe that it is fatal though and so other possibilities should be considered.
