• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mischief is coughing

Mischief just made a loud harsh noise like he was coughing that woke me up. It sounded like a cough anyway. Sounded too harsh to be sneezing. I have heard him sneeze before and it did not sound so loud or harsh.

I tried to look in his mouth but he wouldn't let me and I didn't want to stress him out. I checked his nostrils and a tiny piece of hay was stuck in one of his nostrils.

He had 4-5 coughs but after I took the piece of hay out his nostril he has not coughed or sneezed since. Should I take him to the vets to get him checked out this morning or monitor him to see how it goes please?

He hates the usual vets but PDSA is just a 10 minute walk. We might be able to get him seen there today.

Well it is morning now as we just had my granddaughter dropped off. I will ring PDSA and explain his background and what has happened. Hopefully they will check him over today. Thank you Bunny Momma x

Thank you. Yes it did scare me a bit but he seems ok atm. We are going to take him to PDSA as an emergency check up. He is due his free 6 monthly check up now at our rabbit savvy vets but we haven't booked him in yet so will do that as well x

So I was too in pain to take him to PDSA today even though they did ring us back so we will take him tomorrow. Saying that his breathing sounds normal. No noises or fast breathing so hopefully the vet will say he is fine 🤞🏻

Sorry to hear that you have pain, but good news that Mischief seems to be doing well, so fingers crossed he gets a clean bill of health from the vet.

Yes we are hoping so. He hasn't coughed since but we are going to take him down the road to PDSA for now as then he will be in carrier a lot less and then we will take him for a check up with Lillabelle next time she goes.

We don't want to leave it as he had a severe lung infection when he was 2 years old. Thank you for your post x

I understand your concern and desire to have him checked by vet given his history of a lung infection. I hope all went well at PDSA for Mischief and hope you feel better today too.

We will take him in the morning hopefully. Yes I wanted to take him before and my OH feels awkward on his own going to the vets. It is better to be safe and get him checked out. Hope you are all well x

A quick update...we took Mischief to PDSA on Thursday and the vet checked his mouth, nose and breathing and she said other than fast breathing (which he always does when going to the vets) he looked fine and she could find nothing to be concerned about which was a relief.

She mentioned that he had fur around his eyes that is growing back and I explained that he has had a milky discharge out of his eyes since we got him at 12 weeks old. I told her I put eye drops in his eyes most days for dry and irritated eyes unless he spots the eye drops in my hand before I can hold him securely and runs off and hides. Bless him ❤️

The skin around his eyes can get sore from the discharge in his eyes as well as causing his fur to fall out. I said I bathe his eyes in chamomile tea which seems to soothe his skin and the cleaning stops the build up of discharge in his fur and the fur is now growing back albeit rather slowly. I did use a little Vaseline on his sore skin for a while but it got worse so I think Lillabelle is over cleaning it?

I will take Mischief next week to our usual vets for his 6 monthly check and ask them if there is anything else that could help him such as eye drops for an infection for instance? I do think it is just one of those things though as he has had it from a young age. It is a relief that he is fine as we have enough stress with Lillabelle atm

Glad to hear that Mischief had a good vet visit, like I said in your Lillabelle post, your bunnies are very fortunate to be in your care. Give him a well done nose rub from me x
