Jack's-Jane
Wise Old Thumper
I was privileged to be able to care for Maya for almost 8 years. She was a Petshop Bunny and no-one thought she would last 8 months let alone 8 years. Maya was on sale for £10 despite her being obviously ill. Infact she had pneumonia
After months of treatment Maya did recover, but her lungs had suffered permanent damage.
However, Maya remained a very happy and friendly Bunny
She was bonded with Zac and they became very close. About 18 months ago Maya suddenly stopped eating hay. Prior to that she had always been a great hay eater. It turned out that she developed a malocclusion and this led to her needing her Incisors extracted and regular Dentals as her molars grew in odd directions due to tooth root elongation. Even though Maya had a compromised lung function she got through numerous GAs. Only one gave any real cause for concern. Her last Dental was last week. She recovered really well and was home and eating within a few hours.
This morning Maya had her breakfast as normal. She then had her Metacam (tooth root elongation can cause pain). I put her back in her enclosure where she and Zac had a groom. Maya then went to her litter tray, had a wee, hopped out and collapsed and died

To say I am still in shock would be an understatement
My only comfort is that Maya went so quickly she cannot possibly have known anything about it. I guess if there can be a 'good death' that is what Maya had.
Me and Zac are going to miss our big gentle girl
I will see you in the light of a thousand suns
I will hear you in the sound of the waves
I will know you when I come, as we all will come
Through the doors beyond the grave
