• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lilac off her food :(

Orenoko

Mama Doe
The last few days Lilac has been eating less. She's now stopped eating hay completely from what I can tell, although she has eaten a massive dandelion root overnight. I just fed her some basil and she's had some, so she's not completely stopped but given all of her health issues I need to get her to the vet ASAP this morning. This is very much not her character, she's a little pig. She's also just sitting in a corner facing the wall, which is out of character. She did have a couple of very small spurs when her teeth were checked a month or so ago so it could be that, but she's still eating dandelion root so I'm not sure it's that. Going to be on the phone to the vet as soon as they open. Wish us luck!

Sorry to hear about Lilac, good luck with vets, hop you can get an early appointment. Sending lots of vibes for her x

Has she been passing poo?

Sending vibes for her x
She is but smaller and darker than normal so I'm not happy with her output. She's actually just come out to have a nibble on a few bits which is positive. I'm worried her pain may be increasing potentially, she's already on metacam, gabapentin and calpol though. Don't want to rush to make assumptions on what's wrong!

Sending loads of vibes for Lilac. I hope the vet identifies the issue and can help.

Given the cocktail of analgesics she’s on I’d request a full blood profile to check on her liver and kidney function and for any signs of anaemia x

Sorry annoyingly I only saw this after we'd already been to the vet! Vet couldn't find anything obviously wrong so treating for symptoms of stasis and if no improvement within 48 hours then back for bloods etc. Positively her weight is exactly the same as when she went a month ago so she hasn't lost anything. Going to keep a very close eye on her.

Has she had a wee? If she has arthritis and therefore reduced mobility she’s at higher risk of bladder sludge. This can cause cystitis like pain. If she is passing sludgy wee/straining when weeing/spot weeing or not weeing I would call the Vet to let them know.

Glad she seems a bit brighter now.

Yep she is weeing and I can't see any signs of sludge, although it's absorbed into megazorb so it might be hard to tell. I try to give her veg with higher water content as well and minimise stuff with higher calcium content just to be on the safe side given her age.

Edit - just checked her litter tray and there's lots more poos, still a bit small but much better in terms of colour. She's eaten a massive dandelion root and some chicory root overnight too that I can see. She left her nuggets (all 7 of them!) but that's not unusual for her, for well over a year now she's been ambivalent about her nuggets!

I think I'll call the Vet tomorrow regardless of how she's doing and ask if I can perhaps book her in for bloods just to check everything, as I don't want to be in a situation where she gets better for a week or two then gets poorly again. She's always been quite robust especially with her digestion so there's always a worry something else could be going on.

As she’s on so much analgesia longterm the Vet should be monitoring her bloods anyway😀 This is because eventually renal function is likely to be compromised so drug doses would need to be adjusted accordingly.

Just waiting for a call back from the vet about potentially getting her booked in for bloods. Positively she's been demolishing her hay this morning, so I'm happy that whatever was stopping her eating appears to be resolving with the help of the meds but of course don't want her to regress so I do want her bloods checked now to be certain.
