• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Been an idiot and nicked skin

I feel awful, I was just tidying Lilac up (she's 10 and can't clean herself as well as before), I noticed a matted lump near her bits, trimmed it off trying to be super careful but I nicked her skin. It's a 1mm cut, I've just popped some antiseptic on for now and am going to use cooled salt water later. The cut is tiny but my worry is the proximity to her bits and whether it could become infected. I'm going to call the vet tomorrow for advice but am really kicking myself for hurting my little old lady.

I've seen old threads on here where people have treated at home but am worried because of her age.

Try not to worry, I absolutely grazed Atticus a few times, he was okay. I know how you feel but a 1mm cut is nothing 💚

Thanks @Graciee it makes you feel guilty doesn't it. I did a video consultation with my vet who recommended salt water several times a day for 24 hours and if no improvement to bring her in.

Sending vibes for you and your Lilac. It can be difficult to trim matted fur in that area yet the matts need to be removed so the skin stays healthy. I hope she heals quickly.

She already has metacam and gapapentin for her arthritis so I'm covered on that front, but didn't have any spray, I'll definitely invest in that.

I've checked her this morning and it already looks like it's healing. I still bathed it and will continue to do so but hopefully moving in the right direction and nothing to panic over.

She's rightly furious with me though, I got growled at for cleaning her litter tray just now, and that was before I'd even gone near her! I'm in the doghouse.
