• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Little old Lilac has had some blood tests and her kidney function is poor, I'm also waiting for results of a urinalysis as well. The vet said she is also showing some signs of anaemia. She's going in for an ultrasound on her kidneys and bladder next week but wanted to ask if others have experience of kidney issues?

She's 10 so this isn't totally unexpected, and on metacam and gabapentin for arthritis. Teeth are good, her weight has actually gone up by a small amount in recent weeks, body condition is good and she's quite lively. The trigger for the tests was that she started to pee outside of her litter box which she's never done the whole time I've owned her so I initially thought she had a UTI but her pee is normal colour and she isn't straining so the vet wanted to do additional investigation.

Obviously I will be speaking to my vet further once we have the urinalysis and ultrasound results but anyone have any ideas on prognosis and treatment?

Sending vibes that Urinalysis and ultrasound results show Lilac's blood work shows kidney function is poor as the result of something that can be treated. She sounds to be in great condition otherwise, so well done.

She's booked in for 29th, my rabbit savvy vet isn't at that branch until that date, but it'll come round pretty quick.

Sending you vibes for Lilac and hope her ultrasound goes well for her. You are doing everything right getting her checked out after weeing outside the litter box.

Our bunny Mischief does this also. We thought he was just getting confused as wees on the tray near the litter box. Your post has made me decide we should get him checked out too so your post could also help him get treated so thank you for that

Thanks Jane, I will need to speak the vet about her metacam use. She's a nightmare with any medication and metacam is the only thing she'll take from a syringe, I have to hide the rest of her meds in food and hope she doesn't notice, but sometimes she does notice and doesn't take it, so I've always relied on the metacam to ensure she has at least some level of consistent pain relief.
