• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Heart, eyes and head concerns in old ladybun

My 11.5 yr old mini rex has been having regular vet trips with an eye infection, and after four sets of antibiotics her eyes are doing well again

She’s also blind in one eye from cataracts and slightly arthritic so on twice daily metacam

However, she’s started to develop a slight head tilt so is now on day 11 of panacur

And tonight at the vet, she was relaxed and eating hay but had a ridiculously fast heart rate which is concerning the vet, who is wondering if the head tilt is actually blood pressure related - and I believe mini rexes are prone to heart issues.

So she’s contacting RWAF tomorrow on our behalf - but anyone any thoughts please? On either what it could be or how to make her more comfortable

She’s mobile and eating and curious and seems totally chill with everything but if there is anything anyone’s done for heart problem bunnies or any similar symptoms, I’d appreciate any advice

Photo is of my beautiful baby girl in her younger days

Thank you

I've got no experience of heart issues, but just wanted to send some good wishes to your girlie. I have a soft spot for Rexes and she is a very lovely Mini Rex ❤️

It sounds as though your vet is very thorough and it's also great that her eyes are now OK. I'm hoping that the vet can get some good advice as to her rapid heart rate. I'm wondering whether the heart rate is actually part of the EC symptoms, but expert advice would be great to have.

Your mini rex is lovely and has obviously received wonderful care to be 11.5. I have no experience with heart issues yet wanted to send you lots of vibes. Also, has she had panacur in the past and did the fast heart rate start after the Panacur?

Adding my vibes for your lovely girl, I agree that your vet sounds very thorough, hope that they can find the cause, if only to put your mind at rest x

Thank you @Omi @bunny momma and @Pets mum for the good wishes for Waffles.

She’s still doing well although her eye is dodgy again so she’s back on antibiotic eye drops again tomorrow. But it’s not affecting her appetite at all, she’s still affectionate and adorable and has a good quality of life so she’s getting lots of love and plantain.

Vet isn’t sure the head tilt is EC - we’re just panacuring as a precaution. She had panacur when we first got her and every time something stressful happened eg bonding. Vet thinks it’s unlikely to be EC as she’s not sure what would have suddenly brought it into the environment. The heart changes are since starting the panacur but could also just be age related

We are expecting to hear back from RWAF this week. Will keep you all updated as it’s a useful record for any future similar cases

It is good to hear she is still having a good quality of life. Perhaps ask the vet if a middle ear infection may be responsible for her head tilt.
Sending more vibes.

I'd agree on checking for an ear infection, Piper had a middle ear infection when she was younger with a pretty dramatic tilt, and antibiotics followed by ear cleaning cleared it up in a few weeks.
