• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Flopsy at vets, hasn’t pooped in three days, still eating

Tomg

New Kit
Hey. We’re in a really tough situation with our 9 year old lop Flopsy.

He stopped eating on Sunday and looked uncomfortable sitting. With tummy rubs and lots of effort/critical care we convinced him to eat some bits and got a few small poops out of him.

We took him to the vets first thing Monday. It’s been a lot of bad news since then. The CT scan shows there’s a lot of poop in there not coming out. The CT specialist believes he has a gallstone of all things.

While he’s eating herbs at the vet, he’s not pooping. His last poops were on Tuesday!

They say there’s not much more they can do and have offered him to come home with us on Saturday. They’re basically saying say goodbye. But when I saw him today I felt some movement in his tummy.

I know the situation is critical, and this really is the best bunny vet there is where we live. So if they don’t know what else to do, and he’s on a cocktail of meds as it is, it’s hard to hold out any hope at all.

I was just wondering if someone had been in a similar situation, and if they’d managed to coax out any poops when their bun was this blocked up.

Thanks

They did. When he got there on Monday his liver was abnormal. But yesterday afternoon they did his bloods again and found they were completely normal. So it doesn’t make any sense why he can’t poop anymore. If it’s a blockage they can’t do anything more to help. But if it’s just really bad stasis how do we convince him to poop. I don’t know what to do, it’s so sad :(

Is he having medication by injection ? In severe cases of gut stasis oral meds won’t work.

He should be on IV fluids too. Gut contents quickly become dehydrated during gut stasis making it even more difficult to pass.

What prokinetics is he on?

A combination of metoclopromide and cisapride works best. Metoclopramide only works on the upper GI tract, cisapride increases hind gut motility.

Exactly where in the GI tract is the impaction?

what was his blood glucose level in both blood tests ?

Oh gosh, how awful...hopefully Jane's advice will help.

Is there no way an operation could remove the poop if all else fails? I mean, I know that would be pretty invasive, especially for a 9 year old, and maybe it's just not really an option with rabbits. I don't know. But I hope he starts pooping today!
