First gotcha day - Captured stray rabbit- ... Scally...

He's seeing Heather, our 2nd choice. Vax are only available in the 50 dose clinics at the moment, I've provisionally booked him in for next Wednesday. At the moment I think he may end up staying at the vets for a dematting/clean up under sedation. I had a bit of a go yesterday and today but the area round his tail is just a wad of orange 'felt', I think he'd be less stressed having that dealt with professionally. His feet aren't yellow/orange so I don't think it's from a filthy hutch .. but no doubt the experts will piece it together.

I'm also concerned about his mobility, his front feet seem to curve inwards, his hops are a bit shuffly. I'm going to offer to let them do x-rays/blood tests etc if they think there is an underlying medical condition rather than just neglect - better to know what's going on. At the moment I think he is old and neglected. I'm not convinced he's eating hay but ate all the willow aunty JB&M gave him and Excel/greens etc. I went out at dawn and he greeted me but when I went out at 9.30 with breakfast I had to go find him as he was snuggled up in the straw etc and banging on the door and calling him didn't alert him.

He seems to be a happy little soul though, all that said....

He is so, so lucky to find you . I reckon he could be deaf - but deaf bunnies are amazing - well mine & MM's & a customers of mines are

He sounds like a lovely fella

If he has some mobility issues he may have gunky ears. If they are very gunked up that would impede his hearing. Hope all goes well with his Vet check xx

It sounds like you've got everything covered, and the little one is going to be a very lucky boy!

I had a rabbit who had had so many repeated ear infections in his short life before he came here that his ear canals had closed up completely and he was stone deaf. Hope that's not the same for Scally (is that still his name?). It could be part of the wax build up I suppose.

Does sound like he's a little old, wee thing

Ah, yes, I should have made the connection there. He was having a good preen when he was at J&B's house but I can't remember if he got his back feet anywhere near his ears.

I haven't come up with any alternative names to Scally and not really put a lot of time into it - It does feel right though as the term is a Lancastrian/Scouse expression so the right dialect for the little chap. ... so unless anything else better comes along then that might be his name. ... (He is seeing Heather though, so you never know ;...)

Oh :? Is she a whizz with names then

Sooo, he's deemed to be between 4 and 5 (estimate of course).. this based on his teeth being yellow and some general condition of his teeth and the skin around his scrotum being wrinkly and saggy I have heard that before actually, Olly was deemed to be a youngster because of the condition of the skin around his scrotum. Not insurable then as older than 4 - but I'd already calculated for that, the risk of one not being insured is something I can live with.

His ears looked okay. His teeth were not great, uneven, crowns missing, he has a spur but not obviously digging into the cheek (or tongue?). Heart, etc etc all okay. She agreed that his toes on his front feet point inwards but no inflammation etc anything to suggest there is a current problem for him... he spine felt okay, nothing suggestive of mobility issues.

He's been clipped and the skin is okay and the matting/staining was on the surface so *might* not be a continuing problem/particular heath issue.

Unsurprisingly he wasn't microchipped. So, the plan is still to have him vaccinated next week and neutered in the near future after the vac.

All pretty good then

That's good news. I hope he continues to do well, you need to get a camera sorted as we need more pics!

That's good all things considered... he is in the right place to have his gnashers sorted out ...& his wrinkly balls:lol: So he didn't need sedation to spruce him up? Do you know I never knew you couldn't insure bunnies when they are over 4 - I always just assumed it would be more expensive

Scally sounds like a lucky bun to end up with you. I still need to read back a bit to get an idea of what has gone on. But I'm glad he's getting cared for now.

I got a posh phone for my birthday but haven't had enough 'downtime to work out how to use it! You'll be sick of photos when I do get to grips with it....

:lol::lol::oops:

No sedation needed. Heather started clipping clumps off but then realised it was going to take a while but felt the skin would be okay underneath so just passed him to a nurse to finish while I waited. Apparently he "wasn't that bad".

Re the insurance - I just had the mindset that I insure with Pets at Home as it's a lot cheaper than Petplan but they don't start new policies over 4 years, Petplan don't start new policies over 5 years old - so I've insured him with Petplan. It was £130, would have been £80 (with £10 voucher) if insured with P@H. Petplan will rise steeply but I figured if I insure for the first year I can keep reviewing it as I go. I'm likely to get an idea of how he is in the first year (then I know I'll be too chicken to cancel just like I have been with by older bunnies!)

Thanks for explaining :)

Soo, Scally has been here for 2 weeks now so his quarantine period is over :D

He had his vaccination on Wednesday (delayed as we had to wait for the monthly clinic, thanks MSD). So he's had two vet checks a week apart. Both vets gave him a very thorough check over and both were very positive about his mobility etc - no wasting, strong kick etc, all very reassuring words. (All my paranoid, I think ). I don't think his teeth are that great, but we will know better when he goes for his neuter. He needs to put on a bit of weight maybe about 0.2 - 0.4kg but he's already put on 0.1kg (though weighed on different scales). His neuter is booked but a few weeks away.

Yay! Glad to hear that he is doing well and has landed on his feet with your love and care.

Thank you.

The little lad gave me a bit of a scare tonight. He's usually scrabbling at the bars telling me to get on with it while I'm fumbling about with the keys to the padlock but I managed to put greens and Excel in his hutch without him putting in an appearance so I had to open the 'bedroom' part of his hutch to find him.... he was sound asleep in nest of hay snoring away :lol::love: It's really windy so I think he'd just escaped it all. Little monkey went into 'hungry mode' when he realised I was there though.

Aw bless. My outside pair were doing similar this morning -out of character for them too!

I've moved his neuter forward to next week (Tuesday) as he's messing about with his greens in the same way Shadow did which suggests to me he's having dental (chewing) problems, so might as well have the full dental examination/necessary work ASAP. I'd also noticed he was drinking masses too which is ringing the same alarm bells... I really don't think he's eating hay but it's difficult to monitor.. but his poops don't look like "hay eater's poops".
