We have Dilys's PM results back and while we have some answers they raise just as many questions. What actually killed her was a perforated caecum Why it was perforated we don't know. The perforation was acute as there was little abdominal change so would all have been over in a matter of hours, we didn't miss anything earlier in the day. I am glad we got her the vetergesic as otherwise she would have been in a lot more pain. Even if we had some way of knowing that this was happening to her yesterday evening there was nothing that could be done to save her. Also we know there was nothing contagious going on which is really important. So although we now know there was nothing we could have done to prevent this we will always wonder why it perforated. One possibility is a burst ulcer caused by stress, although there was no actual evidence of this in the PM. Of course I asked if the bonding would have caused it. The answer is no, it would have taken months of stress for ulcers to form and then burst. So I think we have to go back to her previous life and possibly conclude that the awful neglect she endured for God knows how long before being rescued ultimately claimed her life

I don't regret bonding Dilys last week as it wasn't a stressful bond. She was the happiest I had seen her in weeks, happy head shakes and attempted binkies despite her disability and she ended her life with her new friend for company cuddled up with her on her special pillow. However my heart now goes out to Siadwell who is a very upset and nervous boy this morning. I am not sure what the future holds for him company wise right now but we will do everything humanly possible to make him happy and comfortable until the right bunny friend comes along for him

I'm so sorry to see this sad and unexpected news. Sending lots of vibes for Siadwell and thinking of you at this distressing time. xxx

I'm so sorry. At least the PM has brought some comfort, you did everything you could for her and she was a happy bunny. Sending nose rubs to Siadwell and hugs to you. x

Im so sorry Dilys passed far too soon. She knew happiness if only for a short while. Hope Siadwell is ok.

Thank you for all your kind words. I still can't believe how unfairly things work out sometimes

Oh no, I'm so very sorry to hear this :( I'm absolutely convinced that some bunnies just keep on fighting for life, and then when they get to their place of bliss like coming to live at Rainbow Rabbits, they let their guard down, relax, their adrenaline drops off, and they pass away peacefully, knowing that they are loved and happy. Gentle hugs for Siadwell, he must be confused, bless him.

Big hugs to you all xxx

Hugs and nose rubs being sent again. She was so lovely and its so sad. Take comfort from her happy last few days. xx

I completely agree with this and have sadly experienced it several times before  It never gets any easier to cope with.
