Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Chief is breathing noisily again! U/d June, eye issues now too

The thump on your glasses must have hurt. I am glad you had the glasses on.
It is good he is breathing better. I hope a course of abx is all he needs to feel better.
Well it feels a bit bruised but no lasting damage. I am lucky it wasn't worse as he did a huge kick and caught me by surprise.

His breathing is still ok and normal speed for him. He tends to breathe really fast when he is in pain so I hope it's caught early.

He really wasn't happy that I was doing his bottom area and wouldn't come out from under the bed for his herbs until much later but he has been munching hay and herbs plus I saw he was drinking earlier so that's good at least

Thank you for your post x

Well it was a nightmare. Chief is fine first of all ❤ We took a 20 min taxi to the vets and put bunnies through the stress of a car journey plus carriers (and Chief absolutely hates the vets) only to find out I had booked the appointment for the 16th April. I asked the receptionist if they could possibly squeeze them in so she went to ask a vet and he apparently was the only vet working today. But he would try and get to us asap if we would like to wait.

Then she came over to tell us we may have to wait 2 hours until after hours. So we were considering waiting a little while to see if a vet could see him. Purely because we were there now and had put the buns through all that stress.

And then she came over and said we need to be aware that if he is seen after hours (6.15pm) then we would be charged £150 as a standard fee for an appointment. And we started to have a discussion through the receptionist to the vet back and fro. They said it was standard practice. Then they said it would be something to discuss with the vet at the time. I then decided to take them home and try PDSA tomorrow even though we had not been there for over a year now.

I rang PDSA when I got home and they were happy to re-register the buns again and we were told to apply online for an appointment in next 5 days. I have done this but will ring them at 8am for an urgent appointnent. This sits well with me. We can still use the other vets for X-rays etc and both have rabbit savvy vets there plus are fantastic with them. The best of both worlds. I will let you know how it goes tomorrow. Fingers crossed

I hope you are able to get Mr Chief examined by a Vet today and that the stress hasn’t exacerbated any respiratory problems for him.

I was saddened by what I read about the vet. I hope a new vet sees him soon today and he gets good care and treatment, I'm sending lots of vibes 🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷

Gosh, what an awful time you've all had, trying to get him seen by the vet. I hope you can get him seen at PSDA today instead.

It must be a bit hard to deny him foods you know he really likes (especially when he begs so much and he gangs up on you with Lilabelle! :ROFLMAO:) so I can understand why you don't want to stop giving him his dried herbs. Decreasing his meals like you've been doing sounds better, then. I hope Lilabelle is keeping her weight on now with her egg cup full of pellets. You're right that it's not good for bunnies to lose weight quickly, so it's good that Mischief's losing his slowly. Buw, aww, he still has a biggish tummy. I'm sure he'll lose that eventually as you carry on with his diet. 😊 I'm sorry to hear you're all living in the bedroom right now since you can't afford to heat the rest of the flat. That must get a bit crowded!

You're right that Sophie's has had a rough time, but she's doing much better now. 🥰

So sorry to hear that you have had such a stressful time, but really pleased that you have managed to register with PDSA. Hope you manage to get an appointment quickly and that Mr Chief stays well x

Thank you for all your replies. I will firstly write a general post for you all and then answer your replies after. I ended up staying in bed yesterday due to pain/fatigue so sorry for the late reply to you all. I spent all day worrying about Chief and the situation with the vets ☹

My OH kept a really close eye on Mischief yesterday though. He said he would have phoned PDSA and taken him straight down if necessary. It is only 10 minutes walk from us so is also much nearer than the other vets. The good news he has not made any breathing noises or sneezing and has been eating/pooping really well and as normal.

We filled the form out to PDSA on Monday and we were accepted and I also wrote an application to them for an appointment but we haven't heard back from them yet. If I don't hear by 4pm today I am going to push for an appointment first thing tomorrow as it is his breathing after all and I realise they only breathe through their nose normally. I feel guilty that I did not phone them yesterday but my OH said he couldn't get any sense from me!

I also worried all day that because I got a bit stressed and walked out (saying I would take him to another vet!) that they would say we could not go there anymore.
PDSA is brilliant for us and always looked after Mischief so well and my old rabbit Bonnie. However when Chief was really sick (when he was around 2) they told us they did not have the equipment there for him so suggested we found another rabbit savvy vet to take care of him. So we found this other vets and they really looked after him well. They have a small animals vet aswell and all the reception and nurses there always say how Chief is so lovely and a real character. And now they love Mrs Chief aswell ❤

So I phoned the other vets today and left a message for the receptionist who we saw on Monday and apologised
if I was stressed out with her and they said it was fine as they know it's a stressful time. In fact the receptionist I saw on Monday looked a bit worried and she was so young and very polite. I don't have any issues with her personally. She is just quoting what the vets have toldher to say. At least now I know we have a specialist vets should we need it. So I don't have to worry about that anymore.

I will let you know when I have rung PDSA at 4pm

It sounds stressful for the human’s too. Sending more vibes for Mr Chief, and glad he is eating and drinking still
It was rather stressful. My OH and I were bickering aswell plus we both have pain so stress makes it worse sometimes. I wanted to wait and push for a vet to see him but my OH wanted to leave. We both agreed to leave when they told us about the £150 though!

Chief is doing well but I feel guilty I didn't chase them yesterday. I did write that he was breathing with no noise though. They probably don't see it as an emergency but it is still isn't it? I am a bit confused tbh. He seems fine now x

That was an interesting article. I wonder if that vets has been bought by a chain? Is there any way of finding that out do you know?

I did not know they charged £150 after 6.15pm. Maybe it is a new thing. I thought it was ridiculous that we got charged out of hours if we waited since 4.15pm. That seemed very wrong. And yes it seems they are taking advantage of us when we are worrying about Chief.

But we couldn't have stayed that long anyway. They were in carriers apart from each other. I was just trying to push to be seen there and then at 4.15pm. It was so much drama when you are stressed enough.

It's about time that vets are being investigated for high charges. Thank you for that article Jane x

Thank you so much. I will hopefully get an appointment for tomorrow. I just hope waiting a day won't be bad for Mischief 😩 💓

I hope he gets seen tomorrow. I will question his weight then to see how much he still needs to lose.

Aw I hope Sophie has better health from now on. It is such a worry isn't it? x

We weighed him today and he has now lost 800g since 4 weeks ago and is so spritely running about. Is that too much to lose so quick do you know? He is geting quicker when he runs I am sure. And he does his binkies again where he jumps up and turns so is facing the other way and shakes his head and you see his ears suddenly appear the other side of the bed as he jumps then his ears disappear again. I love it when he does that 😂

I rang them and they said I need to ring at 8am tomorrow for emergencf appointments and they will decide if Chief nerds an urgent time. I am going to say he is sneezing today (although he isn't) as I feel it is urghent if his breathing was noisy the other day plus sneezing. He seems much improved but he may he hiding his problems perhaps. I'd forgotten about that bit.

I will make sure we take him to PDSA for a check up tomorro. He has had runny eyes again a little so needs eye drops aswell.t could all be related.

Sorry not posting in other threads but I'm really drowsy tonight. Will trylater or tomorroe x

Thank you. I rang PDSA this morning to push that I don't want to leave him too long without seeing a vet as a respiratory infection with rabbits can be easy to miss as they hide their illnesses. She asked me if I had requested an appointment and said yes we have submitted a request.

The receptionist said we are going through the list now so we will probably give you an appointment today. I feel awkward pushing it any further as he has been looking fine for the last 2 days and they probably have emergencies to deal with. But I also know that Snuffles can be hidden until it's too late. She said it was fine to call if I am concerned and we should hear back soon. I just hope he is seen today and get his runny eyes sorted aswell. His runny eyes are just a little and we clean them but I think he should have them checked aswell and get a daily eye drops maybe?
