Chief is breathing noisily again! U/d June, eye issues now too

Mischief is breathing loudly through his nose again. It is now and again but he is breathing without noise most of the time. As he had a serious lung infection a few years ago I am worried it is linked. I did notice he sneezed yesterday a few times and rubbed his nose with his paws. He is also snoring more than usual but he has always snored loudly. I just thought it was probably old age and being overweight. He is still eating and pooping as usual and drinking fine. I did think he was grumpier than usual as growled at me a couple of days ago. And did it again to my OH today when we picked him up. We just hope it can be cleared up with antibiotics 🤞

He has been on a diet of less greens and much less dried herbs and no pellets. He only has a treat if we have to handle him a lot to cut his claws etc but then it is only a loop (Science Selective) or half a fibre stick. He is losing weight very slowly as he is such a piggy and lies on his dried herbs guarding them. We have been gradually reducing his food as he begs constantly if we do it too quickly. But he is running about more and binkying lots in a day now so I think it means he is happier for losing some weight although he misses his extra food.

We will take him to the vets on Monday. We get paid then and we don't have the money for the vets until then. Unfortunately as he had a lung infection before I doubt that Agria insurance will cover it. I just hope he just needs antibiotics as if it is in his lungs we are looking at hundreds again. We can't take him to an emergency vet this weekend as it is £50 for a taxi each way plus £300 just for them to see him! :(

I have been trying for months to get on this forum to say hello from these little guys. I have been going via tapatalk to the old forum not knowing it had been changed. Our internet is rubbish as we live in a basement flat and as it kept saying it was a network error I thought it was that. As I have been trying all day to get on this forum my OH looked up the site on Google and saw it had changed and I finally managed to get on to post here. So hello to everybun from Mischief and Lilabelle and nose bumps to you all ❤️

I would get him examined by the Vet ASAP given his history. Hope iif he has a recurrence of the RTI it is confined to his upper respiratory tract and not on his lungs again. Getting some weight off him would be a good idea as being overweight will put additional strain on his heart and that will add to his breathing problems.

Yes we will definitely take him on Monday and just pray it is only an UTI so can be treated with antibiotics.
I hope you are managing ok and that your menagerie is all well x

Glad you made it onto the new forum 👋but sorry to hear that Mischief is concerning you with his breathing. Really hope that he gets on OK at the vets, let us know how it goes. Sending lots of vibes x

I'm sorry Mischief is breathing noisily sometimes, and snoring more and being grumpy. That would worry me, too, with that lung infection he had in the past. That's good that you'll take him to the vets on Monday, and I hope it's something easily taken care of. Sending him lots of vibes, and hello to him and Lilabelle, too. ❤️

Thank you for the vibes. He seems happy as usual cuddled up with Lilabelle and noisy breathing has stopped. Hopefully he just needs Baytril and will improve quickly.

Very happy to get on forum again. Missed being able to chat with everybun x

They are really happy to hear from Casper and Sophie and send double nose bumps back! ❤️ Hope you are all well x

Yes Chief is not enjoying his diet much. My OH opened the crate to get Lils her pellets and Chief ran straight over to try and get some so now he has that sussed as well. He misses nothing. I would have usually put a laughing smiley after that sentence but it seems wrong somehow when he is poorly :(

I have cut down his greens and dried herbs to half of what they had. And it is still taking so long for him to lose weight. If I cut a meal out he will be so stressed out. He gets so panicky waiting to be fed. He has sussed that Lils has pellets now so we will have to think of a new plan. Maybe feed her in the lounge however she is still flighty so it's getting her in there. We don't pick her up unless really necessary as she still buzzes like a bee and panics if we do. I didn't mention that Mrs Chief is at a great weight now. She has a tummy that is small but slightly rounded and full with food and she looks straight when she lies down with no tummy bump ☺️

Plus Mr Chief has lost half a kg but still feels a bit heavy and has a tummy that still curves out when lying down. We can feel his ribs better now though. He must have been so overweight and it was all my fault feeding him too much. I worry about all the fat around his organs and how it has affected his health 😞

They are both very much in love and Lilabelle even lets him steal her food and just gets him back later. They never argue and Lils grooms him all the time and Chief licks her head sometimes. Getting Lils was the best thing we could have done for Chief. He is so happy and it's so lovely to see. Seeing Casper and Sophie together in all your photos really swayed us into getting Chief a friend plus all the posts from everyone encouraging us through great advice. So thank you Casper and Sophie for your beautiful modelling ❤️

Aw, we're all doing all right, thank you.

I'm sorry Chief isn't enjoying his diet much (well, who would enjoy going on a diet, really...), and that he's now on to Lilabelle getting her pellets, too, oh, no. Poor boy getting so stressed and panicky about his food. If only you could make him understand that it's for his own good... I hope you can figure out a new plan for getting Lilabelle her pellets without Mischief knowing. That's great that she's at a great weight now, though. 😊

Mischief losing half a kilo is something, though I realise he's a big bunny. He's losing weight, even if it happens slowly, so you're doing well with his diet, though I understand why you would worry about his health. Has his vet given you a target weight to reach with him?

It's so good to hear that they're so in love and that Chief is so happy now, aww. 😍 I'm so happy that Casper and Sophie could help Mischief get a friend. ❤️

Yes he does not understand bless him. Every time I wake up or go near the place where treats usually are (we had to move them) he is there hoping to get some. They both beg a lot still and jump on the bed and gang up on us. Lillabelle for her nuggets I think but Chief as he is always starving 😂 We live in the bedroom nowas can't afford to heat the whole flat. Neither of us are working due to health problems.

Chief still has 3 meals a day which are fresh greens twice a day and dried herbs later. He loves his dried herbs the most I think so we really don't want to stop it. So we have gradually decreased his meals. He eats loads of hay aswell though. I will see what vet thinks tomorrow but they will probably say to stop the herbs and fresh greens and just feed hay like last time.

Lils struggles to keep on weight on now. We started on a few nuggets but she lost weight so rapidly that we had to up it. Now she has an egg cup full of Science Selective in the evening.

They eat herbs together and he probably eats more than her but they have a lot less now and he is slowly losing weight. I read it was bad for a rabbit's liver to lose weight too quick? He has lost loads and no longer feels a hefty weight to pick up. However he still has a biggish tummy so we carry on with his diet until that goes. I will ask the vet how much more he needs to lose though.

I'm happy to hear you are all doing ok as I remember Sophie had health issues. I need to catch up on chat to hear how everyone is doing. A lovely pic of them on your post as usual ❤

Ok so an update...Chief has not made a noise when breathing all day which is weird. I know he hates the vets but he is going anyway. However I did hear him sneeze again. It does sound like snuffles or similar. I don't know much about this but I know sneezing is a first sign that something is not right. Hopefully we have caught it early 🤞As usual thank you to everyone for your kind posts and vibes for him. It helps to know you all care x

Good luck at the vets tomorrow, really hope all goes well for lovely Mr Chief, will be thinking of you x
Thank you so much. He is actually doing fine today. I checked his bottom and anal glands so he is nice and clean for the vets. He was lovely and clean mostly but my OH has to hold him up for that sitting upwards and hold his back legs as he is so big and strong.

His breathing was fine. No noises at all. He managed to do a full double kick on my glasses though due to miscommunication! My OH thought I said OK meaning done when I actually said OK meaning going in. Really hurt! 😂

The thump on your glasses must have hurt. I am glad you had the glasses on.
It is good he is breathing better. I hope a course of abx is all he needs to feel better.
