Are my 2 female rabbits already bonded?

CocoLoco

Young Bun
Hi all,

My 2 unspayed female rabbits are currently getting along well. They had a false bond when they were still kits as they were in the same hutch since birth and are also the same age but once they hit around 4 months, they started fighting. We ended up separating them while we save some money for spaying. However they often break the barrier between them. The first 2 times this happened they ended up fighting (pulling each other’s fur out) but nothing too severe. This happened the third time but this time they did not end up fighting. Since then, they are inseparable. They like to share food in one bowl even if they both have their own, they groom each other, lay right next to each other and with their heads touching or snuggled up together, one seem more dominant but the other one seems like she’s ok being stepped on and being the submissive one, they can even share a litter tray and go potty at the same time. I’m not sure if this means they are bonded already or not since they are not spayed yet and we have not started any bonding process. They currently have some supervised time together as they seem to miss each other if they are apart for too long. Shall we just keep them together 24/7 or shall we still separate them when we are not around?

They certainly look comfortable with each other. How old are they now?

It's a difficult decision to make. If they have a bad fight, then it might mean they won't bond easily afterwards. They will also be hormonal as they're not spayed and so likely to be a bit temperamental and unpredicatable.

Best is obviously to try to get them spayed asap. But until that can happen, I would be inclined to separate when you are not with them to observe. I would keep them close to each other though, but with a barrier between.
