  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

When should I return to the vet

No he's not really happy about the surgery as its the very last thing he wants to

I was referred to them by my vets and to be honest they have been fantastic, as Cairo has lost even more weight, now .822 kg we're just about at last chance saloon... The spaying was my suggestion as she was booked in the following week, he was OK with it

Well CJ Hall are Exotics Specialists. I really hope all will go well.

Cairo is hanging on in there but he's a long way from good. So few bits I've managed to get wrong and hopefully I'll be able to explain. He went in this morning and his leg issue isn't EC but most likely a prolapsed disc. Not a fracture as they did a few x-rays. The large mass is not poop but puss from an absyst. The absyst is large and at the point where the Cerum meets the small intestine, worst news was it had attached itself to a blood vessel feeding the small intestine. This absyst has been removed along with another also in the Cecum as well as the solidified puss. Part of the Cecum has also been removed. The 3rd absyt can't be reached and is in his pancreas (I think) Against the odds he's survived the surgery and is comfortable, he is on super antibiotics as well as the usual pain medication and will be touch and go for the next 24/48 hours. We need the infections to clear, his new reworked digest system to work hopefully and that the blood vessel still works. The odds are still not fantastic but he now has a chance of a normal life. His sister Cookie was spayed just beforehand and is doing really well.

Oh goodness poor boy. I hope that despite the very grave odds he will pull through. I am glad that your Doe is doing well after her spay.

Oh poor boy, he sounds a little fighter to have come this far, really hope he pulls through. Sending a million vibes for him xxx

Sad sad news I'm afraid, Cairo made it through the night but a few minutes ago his heart gave out due to the infections and he passed away. Lost my lovely little boy 😢

I am so, so sorry. I must admit that I was amazed that the Vet attempted such major surgery on a Rabbit who was already so sick and had another health problem too. Also that you were told a prolapsed disc would heal itself. It wouldn’t . Your boy is now at peace and hopefully in time the memories you have of him will focus more on the happy times than just his final illness.

I also hope that your Doe will give you some comfort as you focus on caring for her as she recovers from her spay.

RIP Cairo
