Binky.. misformed spine+vertebral collapse. Great UD 84 June 2014

I know the feeling. Now Cutie-pie and Bandit are home and inside, everytime I go near them and put food in, they freeze and refuse to eat until I am gone. I have to look through the gap in the door.

I am definately in the bad books.

Don't know what to advise about moving in. Mine were in, then out, now in again and they hate being inside.

Yesterday morning when I was attending to Binky he was a lot quieter and hadn't eaten overnight. He wasn't accepting any treat food and just went back to his heatpad. He just looked so fed up.

Mid-late morning he came over to me, refused a treat and then went back and flopped on the heatpad. I had him re-admitted. I've just rung now, nearly 24 hours later, he's not eaten well overnight and is being syringe fed :cry:

Poor Binks. I'm preparing an indoor home for him as I don't think the cold can be helping him. I think he will be okay indoors, I might even work it for him to be indoors in winter and out in summer.

I saw Bink's x-ray today and his spine is misformed as well as arthritic

He should have 7 lumbar vertebrae but only has six and one of them is misformed as it tried to be 2 but is a big single vertebra, FHB thinks that the spinal cord has to take a twisted, even possibly looping route through this :( There's also a change higher up his spine from an x-ray 20 months ago where it's no longer a smooth curve but a bit angled.

There's possibly also a problem with his teeth to explain the reason he doesn't eat greens so that's being investigated. He's not eating pellets at the moment and despite being syringe fed has lost some weight.

He's bright enough in himself. He's still there whilst more diagnostics and treatment regime is planned.

Poor little lad. :(

I hope he's home soon and can improve with treatment. He's most certainly got the best vet anybun could wish for!

Sending loads of vibes. xxx

Thanks everyone.

:( poor baby, how does that happen?
I hope he gets better soon xxxxx

The abnormality with his vertebra was just something he was born with, the other part of his spine, I'm not sure if it's injury or just wear and tear, I forgot to ask, it might not be something they can answer anyway.

It's even sadder knowing he got the name Binky on account of his athletic free ranging

Today's x-ray confirmed FHB's suspicion that Binky has a collapsed vertebra, this is where his back up near his neck no longer has a smooth curve to it. This would explain the level of pain he was in :cry::cry: It's inoperable, we just have to give him Metacam and hope it will be enough for him to cope .... if it isn't then .... :(:(:(

It was also confirmed on x-ray yesterday that Artie's remaining kidney isn't coping fully with the demands placed on it. He's in kidney failure, but he's 8.5 years and he "could" have another year, so he could achieve what would be his live expectancy anyway. I'm trying not to let this tear me apart because he's had 18 months since the kidney stones episode and *touch wood* at the moment he is very happy and behaves like he feels well. His treatment for bladder sludge has now stopped because the bladder sludge as stopped as the calcium is no longer being excreted through urine but going into his bones (which is how x-ray bore witness to this change).

It hasn't been a good week :cry::cry::cry:

Really sorry about the news on Binky's back and Artie's kidney.

I hope that they both manage their conditions and have much longer time with you.

Really sorry that the latest news has not been too good

I hope that both Artie and Binky can remain as comfortable as possible for as long as possible xx

Sorry you have had such bad news this week :(

would acupuncture help relieve some of Binky's pain? Sorry if it has been suggested earlier in the thread

Thinking of you and your boys xx

I'm so sorry you and the boys are having such a bad week. :( Hopefully something can be done for Binky and Artie will get to enjoy many more happy months in your loving care. Lots of vibes for them both. xx

I'm so sorry to read the update. :(

I hope that both your boys can be happy and comfortable and be with you for a good while to come.

I'm so sorry to read this news. :( I have no helpful advice but wanted to leave (((((((((((healing vibes)))))))))))))) for both Artie and Binky.
I hope both can be helped and kept comfortable. ((((((((((((((Hugs))))))))))))))) for you too, I'll keep you and your bunnies in my thoughts and prayers.

Just seen this and just wanted to send Artie and Binky lots and lots of vibes!
I also wanted to send you a big hug! *squeeze* This must be so hard having such bad news about 2 buns

Does FHB think Binky's spine will heal where the vertebrae is collapsed? Obviously it probably won't heal completely but at least to the point that he won't be in so much pain.

Thank you so much for the lovely messages everyone, it really helped to read them when I was feeling quite down.

Hugo's there - not sure about acupuncture but I will bear it in mind if something more is needed.
Vegan Bunny - I'm not sure about possible healing, I *think* we're just preventing further injury.

Well, Binky is home
:D:D

I went to collect him by appointment and saw the x-ray and I wanted to cry, I felt so so sad and sorry for the poor bunny to have inherited this  Viewed from top his spine has quite a twist to it and his pelvis is quite clearly at an angle which no doubt causes other problems. I was wrong about where the collapse is, it is right by the misformed vertebrae so kind of waist level then up two bones (I think ) The pain is most likely from these bones pressing on the nerves at this point, you can imagine how painful it must be. FHB also commented that his bones look quite light on the x-ray indicating possible osteoporosis, possibly due to poor diet as a youngster - so unlucky on two counts!

Then, as if that isn't enough, she then said that we could start worrying about the liver also but best not to go there .... for anyone that doesn't know Binky's litter mate had a deformity of the liver that meant he wasn't getting the nutrients from his food as it was configured wrong with the blood vessels, this also caused him to not be able to cope with a GA. Binky's liver doesn't look right and "is small" on the x-ray - I suppose this means the prognosis for any lengthy surgery would be more guarded then... as well as I suppose the potential for him not getting the correct nutrients from his food also. Boy this poor rabbit has been so unlucky it's just heartbreaking. FHB said that Binky was an unfortunate name, given the circumstances and I explained how it wasn't just given to him but that he earned it, it's so hard to believe seeing the x-ray that he was racing around and flying through the air during the summer

Anyhow after driving him home and thinking he was severely handicapped, I got him home and he's been periscoping (gingerly) and keeps leaning against the bars when socialising, he can hop and I've seen him scrabble using both front paws and he's also used his back legs to scratch his ears.... so I'm feeling more optimistic than I did when I collected him. He's living close to my front door and when I got home from work he was leaning against the side of my pen as greeting me as if he'd always lived there, I think he will like being a housebun after all :love:

And the way I was greeted by Artie when I just brought his greens gives no clue to him being anything other than thriving :love:

It sounds as though both Binky and Artie are feeling OK within themselves. They are blissfully unaware of their problems so they dont have any anxieties and 'what ifs'.

I hope that they remain in such good spirits for as long as possible xx
