• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vet recommendations around Middlesbrough/Stockton?

Just wanted to make a separate post about any vet recommendations anyone may have. As I've said in my post about Piper's health I'm not overly confident in my new local vets abilities. I have an appointment with a supposedly rabbit savvy one tomorrow, which is the closest one recommended by RWAF (https://www.vets4pets.com/practices/vets4pets-bishop-auckland/) but I have to say some of their recent reviews don't inspire a lot of confidence, and seem to mostly see dogs. I'm still going to take her there and check them out a bit but I don't know if I trust them to put her under GA in her condition. Unless I find a vet up here I trust I'm considering driving the 1h 1/2 back to our old vet, although I'm not sure if he's back from leave yet. This would be stressful for her but it may be the best solution.

I don't want to explain medical details here so as not to split from my other post, this is just a quick one to see if people have vet recommendations for this area, they would need to be experienced in rabbit dentals.

We've had to use the Vets Now Emergency clinic a few times (out-of-hours vet based at Jacqui Patersons in Preston Farm), as well as the daytime vets at Jacqui Patersons.

Can't say we've ever had a bad experience with them, the staff all seem knowledgeable and friendly. As there are 2 waiting rooms (one for cats, one for dogs - we usually get put in the cats waiting room) it seems a little more relaxed for our boy.

We are actually registered with Vets4Pets (previously Hartlepool, now the Marton Road Middlesbrough branch as it's closer to our new home) but imagine that he gets more stressed than he already is about the vet trip, as they only have one mixed waiting area/reception as you immediately enter, with dogs barking & crying.

I wouldn't say we've had a bad experience with their staff either, just prefer the atmosphere at Jacqui Patersons due to the separate waiting rooms.

Would also like to know however, if there are any actual Rabbit specialists in the area, as they are such delicate little creatures we want to make sure he only gets the absolute best care. Again, we've not had any bad experiences but would be interested to know other people's opinions and know how credentials with rabbit care compare.

Sorry for the double post - did you have any luck finding a vet?

Our boy has just been treated yesterday at Vets Now for GI Stasis and is currently on the mend, but they did pick up that he's got a slight spur on one of his back teeth, so we're needing to get an appointment to have that sorted under anesthetic.

Trying to weigh up whether to use Vets4Pets where we are registered, or transfer to Jacqui Patersons, or use another vet if there is a rabbit specialist nearby.

Hi thanks for the reply. For my rabbits dental this week I'm going back to my old vet (Battleflats in Stamford Bridge, near York). I didn't find one around here that I feel very comfortable doing it given it's a root elongation surgery. I decided the long drive was worth it, but Piper does well on trips so that's up to you.

Sorry to hear about your boy, we've been dealing with stasis here too, great to hear he's on the mend. These bunnies do keep us on our toes! Have you had a dental done at either of the vets you mentioned?

They definitely do!

Sounds like a wise decision, they're way too fragile so definitely worthwhile sticking with a vet your comfortable with. Hopefully Piper's surgery goes well, poor thing!

Flump had some treatment for spurs when he was around 1 or 2 that went fine at the Hartlepool Vets4Pets - he's now 7 though so it was quite a while ago. Can't remember if he had to be under anesthetic last time but I imagine this time round he'll have to be.

Booked in for a consultation with Jacqui Patersons this afternoon for them to have a proper check of his teeth before we do anything.
