• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Very very sad question - mammary cancer

Hello everyone, longtime lurker here, otherwise known as the mum of Blinkie bun. I've just had the dreaded call from the vets... our beautiful bunny Blinkie has mammary cancer. A couple of weeks ago a large lump appeared on her side, it came up within days. We took her to the vet who operated and sent away for testing. That has come back today as mammary cancer. They've said that the margins were not clear and that it can spread (they need to x ray etc to see), but the prognosis isn't good. I really hope noone has gone through this, but if you have, I was wondering if you had an advice please? They've said she isn't in pain (tho is on pain med since the surgery), I wouldn't want her in pain, but other than that, she seems absolutely fine. Eating, binkying, playing. If you didn't know you wouldn't know. Anyway, if anyone does know what to expect and what may happen, i'd be grateful for your knowledge please. thank you.

Is she spayed?

What happens now would depend on the results of further imaging to see if there is evidence of metastatic disease.

I've no experience but really sorry to hear Blinkie has been diagnosed with cancer. Its good to hear its not bothering her yet - I hope you've a decent chunk more quality time with her

Hello, yes, she was spayed when she was 5 months old, she’s nearly 9 years old now. We have an appointment tomorrow.
I would imagine that palliative care would be the way forward. If the chest X-ray is clear then she could continue to enjoy a comfortable QOL for a while. It’s impossible to say how long though. Personally I would not put her through chemo’, but that is something only you and your Vet can decide.

She sounds to be very happy at the moment and I hope she will continue to be so for as long as possible

I'm very sorry to hear your news about Blinkie. I've no experience either, but I'm pleased that she seems absolutely fine. Fingers crossed for her x-rays tomorrow. I hope nothing further is found.

I am aware that your vet has said that it 'could spread', but I would ask whether histology has given any indication of the type of cancer and how aggressive it's considered to be. If you will be seeing the vet who operated I would want to ask him to give a report on the details of the operation. If there's anything that you don't understand, I would ask for clarification.

I hope all goes well tomorrow.

I am sorry your bunny has cancer. An x ray will let you know if cancer has already spread to other areas and depending on where it may or may not have spread, she could have a good quality of life with pain meds and supportive care. If the remaining cells are localized additional surgery may be suggested. The amount of quality time will depend on other factors, though being spayed is a plus.
Your bunny is happy now, so I would not want to do chemo.
Sending vibes she has much more quality time.

I've no experience of this, but sending lots of positive vibes that Blinkie can continue to live happy and pain free for a long time to come.
