• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Usual fat growth just on left near his tail

New Kit
My rabbit, Shadow, is almost 8 years old and recently has started to grown lots of fat/loose skin above his tail near his bottom but only on his left side. It's almost like a 'butt skirt' as some people on here have called it but it's only on one side of him and it seems to be growing.

He even has grown some fat/ loose skin on his left foot too.

He is not overweight and has no known health conditions but did lose some weight about a week ago from sleeping in the bed with me the entire night instead of eating. He has since gained this weight back though.

He also used to be able to easily jump straight on the bed but has suddenly lost this ability within these few weeks, presumably because the extra weight weighing him down, and the fact that it's only on one side, toppling him off balance.

So mostly he's just been sitting around but still eating and the fat/ skin/ whatever it is doesn't seem to be causing him any pain.

As you can see from the picture, just one side of him has this weight and it's starting to make his fur matted too from pee and poo.

Does anyone have an ideas, i'm starting to get worried about him and am trying it take him to the vet next chance i can.

I would get him looked at by the vet as soon as you can. It may be a fluid build up, rather than fat. Meanwhile, he needs extra attention to keep his rear end clean - so extra combing, and maybe a bum bath to remove the build up of debris.

Yes, thank you, i have tried to clean him with a washcloth and water but he really doesn't like it. I will call the vets on thursday when they're next open

I agree with Shimmer, best to get a vet to check him out. Shadow sounds a lovely character, hope he gets on ok at vets, let us know.

Your vet may be able to aspirate some fluid/cells and give you some idea what this could be. If he is getting soiled the vet can help you trim the fur in the area it is getting soiled so it is easier to keep clean. Sending positive vibes for your lovely Shadow.

Hello just back from the vet. Over the past 24hrs has has gotten a lot worse, he cannot even walk now as he topples off balance. Unfortunately we will have to put him down. The vets thought it may be best to do it then but i just couldn't so i've decided to bring him home for one last day so me and my family can give him a goodbye. The vet does not know what exactly it is, it may be cancer or lymphoma. They said we could get further blood tests etc but even if they did know what caused it, it is very doubtful they could fix it. The vets were extremely nice and it's just hard to say goodbye to Shadow. I love him so much and i love spending time with him every day it's hard to imagine him not being here anymore
