Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Syringe feeding

Is there a syringe that is meant to be used with critical care formulas? I am using an oral syringe to feed Twinkle but I have to make it very watery to get anything up the syringe?

I dont use the formulas but make up my own with water and pellets, i use a 1ml or 5ml syringe, depending on how much and the condition of bunny, sometimes, you might find it easier to cut the end off the syringe, especially the 1ml ones and do it like that, we've done that for Ginger in the past, as similarly to you, it can be too thick if you make it up that way.

That's what I am doing, watered pellets but find I have to make it very watery to get anything in the syringe. Prefer her to get more pellet than water though.

In which case, yeah, make it thicker, then cut the end off a 1ml syringe if you have it so its about 5mm in diameter and then syringe into that and out again, its big enough for a bunny mowf :)

The hay experts also do a critical care syringe which has a wider nozzle but you may be just as well of just to cut off the tip.

There's a great syringe that comes with the Supreme Recovery Formula which may be available.

I've never particularly found a good way. I have always made it really watery, but was advised with guinea pigs to make it as thick as possible, to encourage eating, rather than them viewing it as a drink. I'm sure the same would be said for rabbits.
