• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sore Hocks

RalloTubbs

New Kit
Hello,

New rabbit owners here.

We have 2 Euro giants one of them (runt of litter) has got some bad hock sores we have spoke to our vet who has advised we need to get some soft bedding for them to help with that.

we did consider stable mat which we feel wouldnt be soft enough to encourge the healing needed for her.

What would people around recommend?

(they are currently inside with us on carpet to start to the healing)

Has the Vet *examined* the Rabbit, this is essential. Sore hocks are ……sore, so she will need pain relief at the very least. Depending on what grade of sore hocks is present other treatments might also be needed. Also, the cause of the sore hocks needs to be identified and treated too.Sore hocks are often a secondary symptom to another problem such as obesity, arthritis, lack of exercise, too long toe nails etc.

Carpet can make sore hocks worse as it’s abrasive. So if she’s now housed on carpet you’ll need to cover the carpet with old duvet covers or sheets

yeah, fully looked at. loxicom for pain, nails clipped

vet thinks it is because of the outside hutch area being decked that is what could be causing it as it isnt soft enough.

although our other bunny whjo is twice the size she hasnt got any issues

Did the Vet check the Rabbit’s hips and spine ?
Is there any sign of hind leg weakness ?

Unless they're on grass/soil all the time it's nigh on impossible to get rid of. Bunny's feet aren't designed for carpet/duvets/sheets/mats/vinyl/timber etc.
