Rabbit grooming

Cotillion

New Kit
I have a neutered brother and sister (different litters so he’s 9 months). He is REALLY furry!!! and not that bothered about being super clean but he has to lick himself loads. His sister has only a small amount of silky fur. She grooms him and then he tries to groom her. BUT he about licks her head off coz he forgets she isn’t a big furry pompom. They have lots of space and toys. Vet has checked them both n given us some cream for her. She’s suggested separating them (just until she loses the bald patch behind her head). but we gave them a couple of hours a day together yesterday and today and then they are next to each other but are separated a wire thing the rest of the time. Is there something that smells or tastes bad or something that I can put on her head that makes him stop licking her near the bald bit, it feels cruel to separate them at all.

When you say they have ‘lots of space’ how much space?

When did the over-grooming behaviours start? Was it after the Doe had a vaccination or injection?

Unfortunately putting anything on the area to try to stop the Buck from licking it will just make things worse. It would draw more attention to the area so the Buck will want to lick it even more. It could also possibly further irritate the Doe’s already inflamed skin.So even the cream treatment your Doe is now having will draw the Buck’s attention to the area. It is likely that you will only be able to have them together when supervised whilst the Doe’s treatment is ongoing.

Once the Doe’s treatment has finished then it might help to change their set up in some ways. Which is why I asked you for more details about it 😀
