• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit abscess after healing

Hi guys,

My rabbit fred had an abscess that bursted but as he is outside rabbit we had a fly strike and million of maggots …. He is under veterinarian care had shots, antibiotics and painkillers. He is doing great but! The side of his cheek where he had the maggots become one big scab derided out and is slowing pealing off. Under is nice fresh skin. My question is is that normal for such a large scab to occur? all I’ve been doing is cleaning it, and let it just fall off but by bit, but as it’s on his cheek he keeps catching it. Should I be putting something on it?

It’s impossible to give you advice without being able to examine the wound. You need to take your Rabbit back to the Vet to ascertain if further treatment is needed. You will need to do this straight away. Also, you will need to remain vigilant about flystrike occurring again. It can quickly be fatal

If the abscess was causes by a dental problem then unless that has been addressed too the abscess will keep coming back. So please don’t delay seeking another consultation with the Vet.

I would not put anything on the scab without the vet's permission. Is it bleeding or opening where it has not yet healed? The scab may be drying and pulling causing your bunny some discomfort, so a recheck with the vet may be the best option.
