• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lillabelle not eating

So we went to the vets this morning and it was the same vet who saw her a fortnight ago. She checked her mouth and said she has really long burrs on her right side rubbing her tongue. Poor girl having that for 3 weeks now. Finally the vets agrees with us that is her teeth.

The vets is now going to claim direct with insurance so we paid £75 excess and are totally skint again but we don't care. She is booked in for next Monday which is far too long but they haven't got a rabbit savvy vet free until then. Poor Lillabelle 😥
They have given us Loxicom for dogs 3ml daily but we will split it in 12 hourly dosage of 1.5ml a day. Just hope she keeps eating until then

You know how I feel about this, but I won’t post it on a public forum. Suffice to say poor, poor Lillabelle ☹️

You should not have been put in this position, you have tried your best to make the. ‘professionals’ listen.

Poor Lillabelle, but glad that she is finally booked in for a dental. Sending lots of keep eating vibes for her.

Sorry I will reply to you all later but right now we just need to check we are doing the right things to help Lillabelle. We came back from the vets and left Lillabelle to recover from the shock of the vets looking in her mouth and the travel in a taxi etc.

Two hours later she was still under the bed so we encouraged her out gently and in to the pen so we could keep visuals on her. She was still looking very uncomfortable and we had given her 1.5 ml of Loxicom 2 hours ago so we gave her the other 1.5 ml of Loxicom thinking she was in pain from her teeth. The vets had instructed us to give her 3 ml every 24 hours. We had decided to split the dose in to 12 hour doses but she seemed like she needed it. We had also given her Metoclopramide as well.

Well she was still facing the wall looking miserable and she wouldn't eat all afternoon. I then realised it might be gut stasis from the stress of the vets and not eating. So after some gentle persuasion my OH did manage to get her to eat some spring greens and a sprig of dill but not much. But then she did 20 tiny little poos like caecotrophs so we knew she couldn't be blocked up.

We gave her a syringe feed. We have realised going slowly is much less stressful to Lillabelle and she often eats it of her own choice in her own time. We managed to get her to eat 30 ml. Not much for her size. We are now supposedly leaving her alone with some fresh herbs, veggies and hay.

She was just staring at the wall and eyes gleaned over obviously in pain earlier. However now she is breathing fast and we don't know what to do basically. We have tried so hard not to stress her out taking everything slowly.

I know fast breathing is a sign of pain as Mischief gets this every time. Is this pain though? Do we continue syringe feeding her please? Her next feed is planned for midnight (3 hours apart). Do we leave her to de-stress for the next hour then syringe feed and keep everything relaxed to help her feel ok. Could she be having pain from GI stasis?

She pooped 20 tiny poos at 8.30pm and we syringe fed her 9pm. She has had 3 sprigs of herbs since 9pm but that's all. It has been such a difficult day for Lillabelle and we don't want to stress her any more than have to. We are keeping things quiet and relaxed here. Am I missing something? 🤔

Sorry for long post I just try to get everything right. Just to let you know, we had put Chief back in the pen with Lillabelle for last half hour hoping he would help her to relax a little. She was really fast breathing such that her head was bobbing. We are worried about everything stressing her out too much 😥

Her breathing has finally slowed right down now to just a little faster than normal. Panic over. Sorry everyone.

She is eating some spring greens but is struggling to eat as it obviously hurts bless her. She is eating well when we hold the food for her on the one side. Her right side is very sore you can tell ❤

I'm sorry things are so rough for her right now :(

I can understand that the vet practice don't have a vet in for the next week - I've had to wait some time for an appointment before due to the vet being on vacation etc.

But in that case, if it's urgent, the vets should recommend another hospital in the area who would be experienced enough to handle it. It's very surprising, my vets usually recommend 1 or 2 exotic vet hospitals if they aren't available themselves, which then means I don't need to research where to go myself. It sounds like you'll need to ask them, since they aren't providing this info upfront.

I am sorry that Lillabelle is still struggling. When you wrote last week after she was admitted, I thought the vet she saw said she was eating well during her visit and she got fluids which helped her feel better. I cannot recall the status of her mouth ulcer at that visit. I am confused why the vet did not schedule her dental then, even if it was a several day wait to get on the schedule/arrange insurance.

I only have one rabbit savvy vet in my area, and none ooh, so I know the frustration you must feel.

Sending lots of vibes for Lillabelle. Did she have fluids in her recent visit?

Funny you should say this, they have suggested their other branch in Deal which is 17 miles away. We are going to take her there tomorrow. I am so very relieved. I don't think she would cope until Monday 😢

Phone the Vets first thing. They MUST get her treated tomorrow or you’ll have to get her to a Vet who can

This cannot go on for another week!
I totally agree IM. This has gone on far too long. Both vets saying it is not her teeth but now saying it is! We were saying this 3 weeks ago! I hate that she has suffered so long. It is horrible to see her struggle. I just hope tomorrow goes well for her and she is already on the mend back home this time tomorrow

I just want to say a huge thank you to Inspector Morse. She has been so much help for Lillabelle and has been giving us advice and 24/7.

I want everybun to know that Lillabelle would not be here now if it wasn't for IM. We will always be grateful to you xx

I thought they were having L for the day to do a GA on her to check her teeth. It was only when we went to pick her up that we were told differently.

They told us she was eating well and did not need a dental. The ulcer had gone and her teeth were fine.We gave her Loxicom the night before so it probably helped her to eat and the fluids helped further. I found it so frustrating as we had to make her wait until the Tuesday as we had no money left only to give it all to them and still NOT get her dental done.

Now that the vet agrees it is her teeth we are able to put it through on the insurance to be done tomorrow. We are covered for dentals luckily. We gave them £236 last week for a dental but they did a stomach x-ray only.

I remember having a conversation with the vet 2 weeks ago where I explained all her symptoms including those that screamed dental. And she sat there telling me why I was wrong. I realise I am not a vet but we do know our bunnies.

It makes me so proud of our little 'big' bunny that she is sitting eating hay now but I realise it would be so painful without pain killer ☹

Oh yes remember Vintage vets who injected her with Metoclopramide without listening to her tummy and checking it was not blocked first?

Well the claim for them has not gone through. They tried to claim for their jabs??? I did find that amusing that 🤭
