• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Helicopter ears post neuter

My boy was neutered 2 weeks ago today. When I picked him up one of his ears was down. I took him back to the vets for a check up and they said because his ear had been shaved there that’s probably why it’s down. 2 weeks on his ear is still like it and he keeps shaking his head as if it’s annoying him. This isn’t a constant but he keeps trying to scratch inside it but keeps missing.
Shall I take him back to the vets?
I’ve had a look inside it and I can’t see anything untoward.

I would take him back so the Vet can have a proper check in his ear canals using an otoscope.

Sometimes the vein used to give IV drugs can be damaged by the cannula and the ear can remain down and possibly feel uncomfortable for some time.

What ended up happening to bun?
I would send the OP a PM to ask as they might not visit the Forum on a regular basis

I really wouldnt worry too much about your Rabbit’s ear still being down. It can take a few weeks for the ear to remain upright again. In rare cases the ear can remain prone to lopping. Or be half up/half down.

As long as there’s no signs of severe bruising or inflammation around the site where the cannula was placed, the marginal ear vein, then just give it time and hopefully it’ll go back to normal eventually.
