• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Frequent dental issue

Her surgery was completed by 10 pm yesterday. Now at its 8.30 am here. She has peed twice and no sign of poop. She has taken her mashed pellets only twice . Shes still sleeping. Normally i do her procedure at noon. And she eats some at night and poops too. This time its taking her somewhat longer 😓

Give her time. Has she been prescribed pain relief and meds to help to get her GI tract moving? Hopefully she will move about a bit soon and that can help to kick start gut motility.

Yes . Her usual motility meds and melvet. I will try to syringe feed her at noon and give the meds . If she follows her usual recovery timeline , she should start her usual activities by evening 😓

She has made some poop. They r irregular shaped and small . She took 2 spoons of mashed pellets on her own . I gave her some syringe feed a while ago. I really dont want to go through the syringe process. It just makes her so stressed 😓

Good news that she has passed some poop and has eating a little for herself. Hopefully she will continue to improve now.
Did the Vet say if Huchi had any soft tissue damage in her mouth ? If some abrasions/ulcers were found then it’ll take a few more days for them to heal. So dont be disheartened if it takes a bit of time for her to get back to eating normally.

No there was no ulcer. But i was told the back teeth needed more work than previous procedures. Also the whole dental work took somewhat longer than the previous ones. She is showing some movements and again has eaten on her own. But i saw this time she was given some painkiller injections before anesthesia 😿 . This one is also a new addition in her surgery

Ok , i am noticing something weird. She wont eat much of her food on her own even though i am making it really soft for her . Probably because she is still in pain . But she is trying to chew wall and her chew toys 😓 this is quite odd to me

Try crushing her pellet feed and offer it to her dry, not softened. She might not want 'wet' food now.

Much brighter this morning. Took more mashed food than yesterday on her own nibbled on hay, ate a handul of coriander. I wont have to syringe feed her today ❤️ also the droppings are back to being round. But she is drinking less .

All sounds good. As she’s been having wet food she probably doesn’t feel thirsty so it’s not surprising that she’s drinking less now. Hopefully she will continue to improve throughout the day 😀

Ya she is doing well like previous times . But this is the 3rd time she has gone through surgery 😓 i am quite stressed about her over all well being . She is still well within herself but she will have to go through these as long as she is alive. Makes me think eventually there will be a large impact on her physical and mental health 😅 Is it actually fair to make her go through these in long run ?

In my view, Huchi is not being impacted currently either from her physical or emotional health and so your final question is not appropriate to be asked now. Assess her on the basis of her health at the time. No-one knows what the future will bring for her or for any other rabbit, young or old. So, enjoy the time you have together ❤️

I agree with Omi, Huchi isn’t thinking ‘oh no, I am going to have to keep having dentals forever’. All she cares about is how she feels in the moment, so to speak, she is obviously now feeling more domfortable then she was prior to her dental. So she will be perfectly happy. She will just continue to enjoy living in the moment and as you are so tuned in to her needs you will know when she needs some more treatment. So yes, just try to enjoy your time together and not spend too much time thinking of what might happen in the future.

The Vet can adjust the GA protocol if, over time, Huchi takes longer to recover. Eg using a lower dose of drugs/ different drugs, giving supportive fluids etc.
