Female Humping

Captain Helen

Wise Old Thumper
Hi everyone!

I've just got a quick question on behalf of a friend...

She has a rabbit that's around 10 weeks old that the vet said was female, but she's been humping her toy ball like crazy (the rabbit, not my friend!). I know female rabbits will mount and hump other rabbits, but do they hump inanimate objects? Or is it more likely that she is a he?

Thanks guys!

H

Hi Helen

Helen here.

Nope it's perfectly normal to see bunnies humping objects, particularly if they fancy a friend. It's like having a replacement. In particular if they are not neutered as they will display hormonal behaviour regardless of whether they are with another rabbit or not.

10 weeks is pretty early but not unheard of. I think maybe they like the feeling of it!

Welcome to RU by the way.

Hi Helen

Thanks for the quick reply! I'll let my friend know.

She has two rabbits that she got as a pair, but has separated them for now until their ops. Just seemed odd that it's the female doing all the humping, I guess she's just matured a little faster than her brother!

I have two baby buns, a girl and a boy ..... they had to be separated at 11 weeks old because the girl bunny kept trying to hump the boy bunny ....... it resulted in a fight and for a while we thought we had two boys but no, she's definitely a girl ... and it was definitely her doing the humping!

Possibly , but then us women tend to have more problems with our hormones don't we LOL. But seriously, I do a lot of bonding and very, very often it's the girly bun that does the mounting to show that she wants to be the boss. I have one French Lop who does it very frequently to her husbun to remind him where he is in the pecking order.

I've never seen rabbits humping inanimate objects though. One of my cats had a thing for a teddy bear, I let him keep it after that!
