  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Baytril Dose

x-vic-x

Mama Doe
One of my buns has been given baytril for a suspected UTI, she has had an injection of metacam and baytril today and I have baytril for the next week starting tomorrow.

She has to have 1.7ml twice a day, does this sound right? It seems alot to me, the last bunny I had on baytril only had 0.4ml.

How much does the bunny weigh and what concentration is the solution (2.5% or 10%)

According to my notes from the RWA conference, it is considered best now to give baytril as a single dose daily (because it works on peak concentration in the blood, not low levels all the time), of up to 20mg/kg.

If my maths is correct (and there's a good chance that it isn't, so hopefully someone else will check!)

...2.5% baytril has 25mg/ml (source: http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Bayer_plc/Baytril_2_5_ACU-_Oral_Solution/-23495.html)

So 20mg/kg = 20/25=0.8ml per kg of bunny.

So to get a daily dose rate of 20mg/kg, a 2.02kg bunny needs 2.02 x 0.8 = 1.61. It's usually rounded up which is probably how your vet came to 1.7ml but I personally would have expected that size dose to be once a day not twice.

Obviously I'm not a vet and I haven't examined the animal or decided why a certain treatment is best, but it might be worth at least querying whether it should be that amount just once a day.

Thank you, I will ring in the morning to check. I saw a thread on here where the vets gave the wrong dose of meds, by accident so I like to check, if I'm not sure.
