My bunny is 8 years old and hasn't been doing too well. The last few weeks she has been doing very well and I was so pleased with her progress. Yesterday at about 2pm my partner noticed her breathing really fast but just thought she must have been running around, he didn't mention to me. I noticed the same at about 2.10pm and also thought nothing of it. About 10 minutes later I came back and she was still doing it. She was lying flat stretched out the whole time but shifting around. When I went up to her she went and hid. I phoned the vet and they told me to take her straight in. She was also doing this vibrating thing for a few seconds then stop then repeat. She started breathing more normally by the time we were in the car. The vet nurse put some oxygen on her anyway while we waited for the vet. It wasn't long before the vet came out and said her tummy felt ok, her temp was ok, her breathing seemed normal again. She said to keep her with them for half an hour so they could check on her. She mentioned doing an xray to see if anything wrong with the lungs if I wanted. I said yes as they could do it without putting her under. The xray showed everything looked ok apart from large areas of gas (phew). Her stomach had food in part of it and then empty so I don't think she had eaten much since Friday night. The vet gave her an injection and told me to give her zantec and try to get her eating. She wouldn't eat apart from a bit of kale last night, this morning I have given her some critical care mix although she is a real pain for taking it, she lets most of it come back out but we got some of it in. She is refusing everything I have offered her to eat.
The veg she gets every night is a broccoli floret, curly kale, 1 fine bean and sometimes some cabbage. Now I am wondering if I have caused the gas with these veg. I have seen them on lists of safe food for bunnies but I have also recently seen broccoli can cause gas and when I googled some info today I saw that kale and fine beans can also cause gas. I think I could get her eating today with some kale as she loves it but I am reluctant in case that makes the problem worse. Does anyone have experience if these veg are likely to be the problem. Also what veg might be better to avoid this problem (although I'm not sure trying anything new right now is a good idea). This isn't a sudden change to these veg or anything so I am surprised and my other bunny is ok. Maybe she's just having more problems now as she is elderly and hasn't been too well. Any advice is appreciated, thankyou
