  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Vetergesic m/dose ??

Rupert & Tia

Mama Doe
Got Rupert home last night - he's not quite himself yet, and he and Tia are not the same with each other :( we think becaue he doesn't smell the same and isn't acting the same. No aggression though, although she did thump and make the 'go away' smell...

I got his itemised bill.... he's had 3 x emperid injections (of 10ml each) and 2 x vetergesic m/dose - I've never heard of this before, reading about it, its an analgesic - should he have had this ? I was expecting to see metacam... he's not had any antibiotics (I expected them to give antibiotics) he's come home with some protexin bio lapis to mix with water (ive used the water to mash pellets for him.

I've got appointment with our own vet (altho just the nurse, going to change to vet) on saturday morning anyway for nail clipping.... should he be having antibiotics, given that he wont stop scratching his ear, and his gut was stopped for so long?

Vetergesic is a very strong painkiller so I would think it was appropriate in the early stages. My local vet would use this, I've occasionally seen it on invoices from my specialist rabbit vet. Unfortunately my local vet has also given it to rabbits just before they come home when presumably they are not deemed to be in great pain as they would be at the start of their stasis episode, so they are "out of it" when they come home. I really don't understand why they do it. Having read your update on Rupert's thread I wonder if he was subdued last night because of the Vetergesic. I don't know about dosage levels though.

Why would you expect him to have antibiotic? Some vets would give it "just in case" there was some underlying infection but it's not something I would be happy about. I'd only want to give it if there was a strong reason to believe they needed it.

They gave him it at 4pm and he came home at 6 - although they may have given him it later than 4 once I said I'd be there at 6. He was very much 'out of it'.

He has been scratching at his right ear - since just before he got poorly - I don't just mean a quick scratch, he's digging his nail right in and its as if its driving him mad - so I thought maybe he might have an ear infection, which is why his gut had stopped - also the night vet we seen on wednesday said 'if their guts stop for more than a couple of hours the risk of toxins infecting them is high so they often need antibiotics' - so I assumed they'd give him some (the first time he had gas he was given antibiotics).

My husband thinks they may have given him vetergesic to calm him down as they made a comment of 'he's certainly been making his presence known' and theres NO WAY they'd be able to force feed him without him being abit sleepy.

I've now changed nurse apt to a vet tomoro morning, and altho I think it will stress them out, we need to get his belly checked, we couldnt hear him gurgling last night (hubs puts his head to him and can usually hear him 'working') he may need another gut stimulant
