Rabbit has myxi

Took to vets this morn, he hasnt given him much of a chance. He gave him an injection of painkillers and give me four lots of antibiotics to inject. He's lying content at the mo but hes struggling to breath and has not eaten all day. He has had a couple of sips of water. I might try syringe feeding but hes not going to like it.

If he isn't eating you must get something into him. Have the vets given you some syringe food like critical care?

And have you tried all his favourite veg and treats?

Has he given you painkillers to give him at home? It doesnt sound like he's being very pro-active about treating your bun. You need to make a decidsion, you either get him admitted and give him a chance or have him pts sleep, he's obviously distressed judging by your posts :?

You really need to give your bunnie as much care as possible. I lost my poor Bobby a couple of years ago to Myxi and it was awful. He was on metacam, baytrail and I had eye drops for him. I also fed him critical care food and baby food. I tried everything possible to get food into him. You really need to get back to your vets and get pleanty drugs for him and the critical care food if he stands any chance of fighting this.

Hes given us a couple of bags of recovery food in the silver pack. Everytime I go near his mouth he just runs off and its stressing him out even more. I grated a load of carrot before I went out before and when I came back in it had all gone so I think he has had a bit. The vet gave him a shot of painkillers when I went this morning. I'll try and give some more recovery food now and see whether he takes it.

grated carrot is nice and moist and easy on sore mouths. You could also try moistening pellet feed (if thats what you usually feed) also fresh parsley and coriander (tricky now smkts are shut - but they will re-open again)

Just to let you know that it will be 2 weeks on Sun since we took him emergency vets. He has started to eat quite a lot, hes munching through cauliflower leaves at the mo. His breathing seems to have improved slightly. His eyes look like they are getting worse though and are almost completely swollen shut. How many weeks would you say before they 'come out the other side' and start getting better?

I'm sorry I have no experience on the subject but having looked at Parsnipbun's thread, it took six weeks for her mixy bunny to be declared fit.
I'm glad your bunny is eating. Sending more vibes xxxxx

So glad that the breathing seems better and eating has picked up - it could be that any nasal obstructions have started to go down (mouth breathing isn't always a result of a lung problem - it can be nasal).

Re the eyes - these can be very irritated and as well as Fucithalmic your vet should DEFINITELY give you a general eye soothing ointment such as VISCO TEARS. The Fucithalmic should be put in twice a day for anti-biotic protection, but the Viscotears is for general soothing action.

IF by any chance your vet has not given viscotears you may be able to get them at Boots or any other good pharmacy.

These are essential not just to stop irritation now, but to ensure the eyeball itself does not dry out as the eyelids swell and do not meet properly to 'wash' the eye. If the eye lids or eye ball dry out it can cause onger term problems with loss of vision.

The vet told us not to bother with the drops but I'll start putting in again today. Just checked what they are and they are 'Tiacil'.

I think you need to see another vet. One that has some empathy with rabbits. I do hope your rabbit recovers and that he is on pain relief.

OK Tiacil will do instead of Fucithalmic.

BUT these should only go in a couple of times a day (they are medicated) you should also use the viscotears to stop the eyeball and eyelid drying out. I suspect your vet is not very rabbit experienced and did not expect your bun to survive and therefore has not thought ahead to preventing long term complications.

Please do not take this as an insult to your vet - MANY vets are useless with rabbits - their vet student training simply doesn't include very much on rabbits and unless they have a specific interest they will often not have bothered learning.

Do you know how long it takes before swelling around eyes starts going down once eyes have completely closed?

I have no idea the answer to your question, but I think its an idea if you asked your vet to refer you to another bunny vet...a referral centre or something.Or get some advice from a bunny specialist.Where are you in the Uk or have I asked you that before????

Do you mean that the eyes are swollen shut?

If so this needs urgent attention as they should not get to that stage as the bunny will be temporarily blinded. The swelling is usually on the eyelids and results in the eyelid swelling up both into and away from the eye - often then cracking the eyelid if it is not kept moist.

The next stage is scabbing over - which should happen about 2 weeks after the swelling starts. This is very uncomfortable for the bun.

Scabbing generally is very very painful and a painkiller such as metacam will still be needed at this stage - especially if there are scabs in sensitive areas such as nose, lips and genitals.

PLEASE find a good vet.

Just letting everyone know that Theo passed away new years eve. It would have been 3 weeks on Sun since we first took him to emergency vets. I think he just stopped eating in the end. The night before he died I syringe fed him 1/2 a pack of recovery food as he was that skinny. Im not sure whether this helped or not.
