Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Not eating after spay, help please! U/D P83

5 isn't old at all! I would wait until she's recovered and then put a claim in for the bladder infection, and the time she's spent at the vets with it. Don't even mention the spay, they might not have made a note of the phone call. Just fill out a claim form like normal. Hope she starts to improve soon xx

I had my girl spayed at 5 and a half. Yes she wasn't great for 2 days. That was nearly 18 months ago and she is a thriving healthy and happy girl.

Small rabbits have a longer life span, 12 in not unusual.

I would not consider pts, she is still youngish and your vet doesn't sound, well that savvy. How does he/she know.

In regards to Pets at Home, I put in a claim a few months ago for £1.422.00 and got it all back other than 2 amounts of excessive, as we used 2 vets.

I would put the claim in and not talk to them again. Get the vet to put in for the statis and infection only as it has nothing to do with the spay costs.

It would seem most unfortunate to put down a bunny who is recovering from an operation.

If you cannot afford vets fees for future problems, you could rehome her.

Update again

Mixed news. Tomorrow is 'the day'. We've brought her home to nurse her and apparently she's only done one or two poos, sticky rather than pellets but there ARE pellets in her which is good. The vets said that because of the whole toxic-shock sort of thing then she would seriously consider pts tomorrow. Vicky is very rabbit savvy and she explained that basically, Dee is poisoning herself from the inside out because all the toxins are releasing inside of her (or something like that, Mum took the call.) and it wouldn't be in HER best interests to string this out. the bill stands at nearly £250 already:shock: and much to our disappointment, the vet did say that as much as she would like to say its not the spay that caused this, Vicky and Marieke believe it was brought on by the op. so we're not going to be able to get any insurance payouts. to be honest, the money worries are now at the back of our mind. Dee is brighter in herself and is drinking thankfully, JUST NOT NOMMING  but there ARE poos in her which is a bit of light at the end of the tunnel as she wasnt producing any to start off with. So we've got baby food (apparently she takes the cc easier if its mixed with baba food) and 3 types of medicine as well as her fibreplex, bless her. We've also got pineapple juice, we're trying everything we can think of.

All those who HAVE had a stasis bunny and are reading this, please can you say what got your bun started again? Thanks

I don't understand the toxic shock element :? Did she explain what was causing the poison or where it was coming from?

Pineapple juice may not be a good thing as it's high in sugar. There are some schools of thought that say it's good for loosening up blockages but as there's no suspicion of blockage with Dee just that she needs to get her guts moving again, I (just my personal opinion) would let the gut stimulant medication do the work there and avoid giving her sugar which might upset the delicate gut bacteria that she needs to build back up.

I really hope she manages to turn a corner, it's so unfair that she and you are going through this. I feel guilty as I was one of the ones that said my 5 year old bunny breezed through her spay like nothing had occured.

Oh and re stasis and eating - all my bunnies go mad for raspberry/blackberry/strawberry leaves, if you can get any of those. Even the dried versions from such as P@H might be worth a try if you can't find fresh.

So she's been syringe fed for the last couple of days and still isn't pooing? Has the vet done anything to rule out a blockage, like xrays? I've found dandelion and dried plantain to be successful in getting a bun to eat. Sending lots of vibes xx

Please don't give her pineapple juice. I saw a rabbit specialist and said it is totally untrue about the hairball/blockage stuff and is far too sugary so wlll upset her stomach.

I would try her with leaves as suggested before or strong smelling herbs. Doughnut absolutely loves rose petals and most buns go mad for them. Can you pick a few from a neighbour if you haven't got any and maybe the leaves too to tempt her into eating.

I don't understand why she isn't pooping if there isn't a blockage. Hopefully the fibreplex will help along with the other meds.

Regarding the toxins thing, I can't remember to be honest :?

No, they haven't done X-rays as its deemed to risky with the sedation or GA they have to use. Although being a small nethie, the vets can feel everything in her stomach and both vicky and marieke have said they can't feel a blockage. Hasn't eaten for 4 days :( she's already been tried dandelion, dill, parsley, carrot, apple, pear, banana and grass. We have no leaves in the garden, no :?

This is confusing all of us, we don't get why she won't poo! Apparently she did do a couple of sticky ones that they found on her bum when they checked her wound. She keeps like straining, her back end vibrates as such, but nothing is coming out.

Sending vibes that your bunny feels better soon. My bluebell gets statis occasionally and I do syringe feed her, the last time she didnt poop all day and I was putting food in but nothing coming out  I was really worried there was a blockage but my vet felt her tummy and actually said that its quite rare for a bunny to have a blockage it just takes a while to work its way through after statis.

I know what you mean about money as well when you keep taking them and have no idea of the cost. I had about 2k in a bank account just for my pets but my OH decided to take up an expensive habit and spend it all without me knowing  I ended up selling all my bedroom furniture apart from my mattress to pay for my vets bills!

I would speak to your vet though about paying in installments my vet does allow people to do this and like people say if you can put a claim into P@H just for the bladder infection on its own and hope they didnt log the call...it's definately worth a go.

Really hope she pulls through and I hope you do all you can for her and only PTS at the last resort...keeping fingers and paws crossed for you both.

Aw man. I realllly hope she pulls through. Give her lots of cuddles and some noserubs from me.
Angel goes mad for dill and thyme.
I'll be sending vibes all day xxxxx

If you submit an insurance claim you give the claim for to the vets to fill in and sign so you'd fall at the first hurdle as the vets would know everything was following a spay and they've already said they won't support the claim as a separate issue. I don't think there's anywhere to go with insurance unfortunately.

From the experience I've had I would have thought if there was a full blockage it would be really obvious for them to feel at this stage as everything would be backing up and her stomach would be enormous. (Not that I'm an expert, just based on what vets have told me). In theory they could do an abdominal x-ray without sedation/GA but it sounds like they are confident in what they've felt anyway. They've felt poops - they just need shoving out now.

One more thing I've thought of - have they given her pain relief at the moment?

She's had a injection of metacam, yeah

Fibreplex, buprenorphine, metaclopromide and Zantac as well as having a shot of antibiotics and metacam:wave:

What's her manner like? does she appear spaced out? the one I've bolded is quite heavy duty and she may not be eating at the moment because she's dozy because of the medication.

No, she seems no more subdued than normal if I'm honest. She's due all of her meds except the CC at between 3-4pm, and I think her first dose was about 8 this morning so I don't know how strong it'd be now

Should be okay from personal experience. Does vary but I've found the sedation effect wears off after a few hours.

When my bunny was poorly with statis a few weeks ago (about 10 days before she fully got over it but she was medicated at home after her original hospitalisation), we managed to tempt her initially with blackberry leaves.

She then progressed slowly to take more Oxbow critical care and then other herbs. Just buy any herb you can to tempt her. I find thyme is quite good as it is stronger smelling and they seem to go for this when they are poorly before they will touch other herbs. Also get some kale, parsely, coriander (a favourite too), spinach, green cabbage.

I also got her to move around the garden gently but not stress her as it can help to start things moving.

My bunny was also diagnosed with having a bit of gas in her tummy so I gave her half a mil of infacol after checking it was OK with the vet.

Some of the painkillers can knock them out a bit so they don't want to eat for a few hours after them (bit of a catch 22  )

Sending her lots of vibes for a nomming and pooing.

What's her weeing like? Just wondering if the bladder infection could be bothering her, though she's had metacam which should help (both as an anti-inflammatory and painkiller) and the buprenorphine being a strong painkiller. I was thinking what you are seeing could be her straining to wee rather than pooing.
