Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Aargh Dusty is ill again!! *Update*

SarahP

Wise Old Thumper
Could see she was ill even before I opened the back door. She's not interested in food. Got her in, gave her a tummy rub, maxalon and metacam (that I have left over), and some poos appeared. Poos are a bit hairy. No eating yet.

I can't put up with this any longer - we'll both be out of jobs, bankrupt and nervous breakdowns!! DOn't know what to do at the moment.

Oh no

It must be so upsetting for you and for Dusty
It seems that the ongoing gut problems are a secondary symptom of a yet to be identified primary problem :?
I still feel post spay adhesions MIGHT be the cause........ :? :? Maybe some pain relief would help Dusty at the moment too :?

I am so sorry she is poorly again

Thanks Jane. I suspected the same, except that Clover gets it too. It seems that it's whenever they are off the Panacur that this happens, since the vet hasn't allowed it all to tally up. Clover is just in her final days of it, and Dusty has finished.

It has to be something contagious surely... too much of a coincedence... Oh I have no idea really.

Still no eating.

Oh no, poor you and Dusty. At least you can recognise the symptoms now, it's often a lot easier for the bun to recover if they are treated early.

I know it sounds obvious, but have Dusty's teeth been checked? I went through a few months of Evo being poorly nearly every week, and I had to insist on the vet giving him a dental. He was fixed after that for ages, and didn't need another dental for a year.

Also, are you insured? My vet managed to let me claim for all the tummy problems in one claim, so only one excess was paid (teeth not covered though).

Am wondering how long it takes for Metacam to work...

Oral or injection?

If given orally and Dusty's guts are not working it may not be absorbed into the bloodstream at all and really needs to be given via injection.
If it is absorbed you should certainly expect some improvement after a couple of hours or so. Given by injection it should take effect much more quickly.

Oh No! I`m so sorry Dusty`s poorly again.

I really hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

Sending loads of vibes,

Latest is that I am at work but husband is at vets with her. Typically my usual vet isn't there, so it'll be one of the really useless ones. aargh!

As I left she was munching on some grass. The tummy rubs seem to help, and I think the (oral) metacam had kicked in. Her guts hadn't stopped altogether (yet) as there were a few poos.

Thanks all. :) Spoke to the husband, and sounds like the other vet was about as good as I expected. Even asked if we wanted to give her the myxi vaccination! erm... no, not till she's healthy!! But did at least get some more metacam, which was very low.

She's eating a bit and pooing at the moment. Wish I could be at home with her. Had to instruct the husband about the tummy rubs, as they really seem to be producing the poo!

Scary, isn't it??!!

Thanks to you all on here. If I wasn't a member of this forum I am certain of 2 things:

1. my bunnies would both be dead :(
2. I would have gone mad with the stress of it all!!

:)

I have had a terrible time recently with my bunnies getting repeatedly sick one after the other.

Mine have been diagnosed as 'dental' bunnies but I am really not so sure at times.

I suspect that EC or some sort of low grade infection has been to blame though can't be sure.

My Nell really struggled with weekly stasis almost immediately after her Panacur. There is evidence that Panacur can create problems with the immune system (sorry search function isn't working). Looking back, I regret not consulting an exotic specialist though my vet did try his hardest for me and discounted all treatment as I was such a regular.

It WILL pick up in time I hope for you and them. I have been a wreck, lost sleep, lost cash (serious vet bills) and lost contact with some of my friends for a while as I had no time. Rabbits experiencing chronic ill health are the most time consuming of pets. Once you get on top of it, it arrives again as if you had nothing better to do. My bunnies used to do it in a cycle. It was truly awful. I can totally sympathise.

Vibes to you and your bunnies and hope it sorts itself out in time. Lots of suggestions were given to me as to the possible cause but nothing explained why they ALL got it at the same time in cycles. Except the Panacur that is. I think all of our bunnies are different. Some do fine with it and others don't. To be honest, I am still terrified everytime I spend time with my bunnies in case it all starts over again. You will get there though, I will too.

What do your bunnies eat? Sorry if this has been covered before

Dusty - that gave me a much needed laugh!

Fiona - thanks. It's nice to know that people understand how I feel - I can't believe how stressful it is!! It's very interesting to hear about your similar experiences too.

Weird what you've said about the Panacur as the one time when they've been at their healthiest has been when they've been on the Panacur - it's when they come off it that they go downhill again. The vet suspects EC is the culprit.

Update is that I am just home from work. Dusty is pretty feisty but not back to normal. Really hoping she improves as I have to go to work and the normal vet isn't in till Thursday. I've booked a phone call with him so I can discuss their further treatment.

Forgot to answer question about food. They get a teaspoon of Oxbow pellets a day, veggies in the mornings. a hand full of grass or so, and stacks of hay.

Have had to leave Dusty today, so have all fingers crossed!! Dosed her up on Maxolon, Metacam and tummy rubs! Those tummy rubs really seem to keep things moving. She was very interested in her morning veg, so all the signs are good at the moment...

Normal vet is back tomorrow, so I have a phone call booked with him to discuss the way forward with both bunnies.
