Poor Bramble is feeling a bit under the weather today :( When I took his breakie out this morning he was not interested at all, which is incredibly unusal. Was worried so have just got back from the vets. He said it might be teeth troubles, as he noticed that Bramble had dribbled a little bit down his chest.

He gave him a good old check over, and weighed him, but couldn't find anything else wrong. He has given him an anti inflamatory injection, and I just have to see if he has improved by tomorrow.

I've got him inside at the moment, as it's so humid outside. He is in the utility room. Not looking very happy, although I think he may have had a tiny munch of a bit of carrot.

Poor little bun, I hate it when he is poorly.

Hiya

Did your vet actually look in Bramble's mouth? It does sound like tooth problems. Both my buns have problems with their molars at the back and have to have them filed down by the vet.

Has Bramble eaten anything today? It is very important that you don't let him go very long if he's not eating as he will get gut stasis and that is very serious.

When my buns get a sore mouth they don't eat so well and their poos get very little.

Can you get an appointment with another vet who knows a bit more about rabbits?

The vet did try and look in Bramble's mouth, but he wouldn't let him. He said to take him back tomorrow if there was no improvement.

Apparently according to the vet's website, the vet I saw specialises in small animals.

He said he would have to put him under ansethestic to take a proper look at his teeth.

Yes, you need to make sure he keeps drinking plenty as if he doesn't the contents of his tum will get more difficult for him to poo out. Does he normally have veg - carrot or greens? It would be good if you can get him to have something like this and sometimes they will eat veg when they are too sore to eat their pellets.

If your vet specialises in small animals I am really surprised that he can't look at Bramble's teeth when he's awake. My vet has an instrument (like a dr uses to look in a humans ears) to look in my buns mouth to assess whether they need to have them done. They shouldn't really be anaesthetised unless it definitely needs doing. Have you been with your vet for long?

Bramble loves carrots and Curly Kale. I've put some right under his nose, but he doesn't seem very interested. Although I think he has taken a tiny nibble of carrot.

The vet did try to look in Bramble's mouth with the instrument you described, but he jumped everytime he tried.

I signed on with the vets earlier this year. (I've only had Bramble since just before Christmas).

He had to go in as an emergency a couple of weeks ago. He hadn't eaten, or pooped and was in pain. They kept him in, and he seem to recover quickly.

Oooh I think he has eaten some kale and carrot!:)

Ok that's good if he has nibbled some carrot and kale. Just keep monitoring what he is eating and drinking and how much he is pooing.

It sounds like Bramble had gut stasis recently when he was rushed into the vet, you obviously caught it early if he recovered quickly. Its very important with rabbits to make sure you notice things like that. One of my rabbits, Bertie, had gut stasis twice at the end of last year so I know how you feel.

If the vet tried to look in Brambles mouth and he jumped it sounds like he does have a sore mouth. I think if I were you I would make another appointment for tomorrow anyway. If his mouth is sore and it's not sorted quickly he could get an absess in his mouth.

Did Bramble have any pain relief, bunnies don't eat if they are in pain and go down ill very quickly. Offer cool boiled water in a bowl, as this is easier for them to use than a bottle. Hope he soon feels better

I agree - I would get him back in. There is always an underlying cause for GA. My Frank has just got over a bout of GA the other day and that was caused by Pasturella. I found the most important thing was getting fluids down him. I was syringe feeding fluid to Frank every half hour. Cooled boiled water or he liked chamomile tea aswell! I don't know whether Bramble would let you but I would give it a try?

Yes, I agree totally with Emm-Jane76 and Hunnybunny2007 - especially about the pain relief. The only problem with syringe feeding fluids is that it can stress them a great deal if they aren't used to it, also, if Bramble has a very sore mouth he won't thank you for putting a syringe into it!

One of the times that my bun Bertie had to have his teeth done the vet said he had ulcers down both sides of his tongue where the spurs had been rubbing. See how you get on.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I am keeping a very close eye on Bramble. Just given him a bowl of cooled off boiling water to try.

They syringe fed him when he was kept in at the vets last time. I guess it's worth a try. Will give my Dad a call. He works at a hospital so might be able to bring me some syringes home.

He seems much, much better this evening. He has been eating well this afternoon, kale, carrot, pellets and now some hay! Seems he is back to his normal self again. He's back outside in his hutch and run again, and is currently eating his 'chill & chew' mat!

I will keep a close eye on him. I guess once the injection wears off he might have the same problem. If so I will take him back to the vets again.

Thanks for your advice and concern. It's much appreciated.

Really good so far thanks. He is very bouncy and has been eating and pooping well! Seems back to his normal self. You'd never think there was anything wrong now.

Is there anything I should be looking out for to ensure this doesn't happen again?

That's great news.

Things to keep a close eye on really are making sure Bramble is eating, drinking and pooing as usual. Keep an eye on the size of poos, if they become very small it can indicate a problem with their tum and can also indicate tooth problems. Also, you will know if he's not himself. If you ever see Bramble sitting hunched up grinding his teeth this indicates that he is in pain.

Basically, if he's not eating, try to tempt him as you did yesterday with veg that he likes and if you are ever in doubt about whats wrong with him, I would suggest always taking him to the vet to be checked out. That's what I do.

It might be an idea just to take him back to the vets soon to get them to check his teeth properly as I do wonder whether he is struggling a little bit.

Thanks for your advice. It's so nice to chat with someone who understands and knows about this sort of thing. It was very reasuring yesterday, when I was worried about Bramble and I was home alone! :) Thanks x

You are very welcome, I can only give advice as far as my own experience but I am really pleased that it was a comfort to you the other day. Having buns is a real learning curve but there is usually someone on here who can advise. Hope Bramble continues to be happy
