Shed advice and recommendations.

I have a few questions if anyone can help. Firstly I intend to put the shed on our grass will this need to be elevated to prevent it from rotting/sinking or could I buy concrete slabs to place it on? Secondly I plan to attach a run to the side to give them 24 hour access what do you feel is better a cat flap or something like a run around system? Thirdly what's best to use on the floor for ease of cleaning?

I also need recommendations on the best place to order a shed from I'm on a really tight budget (have £160 in the rabbits fund jar so far). I was hoping to buy one from argos and use our card to spread the cost but the reviews aren't particularly great. If anyone has bought one from there please do let me know how you found the quality of them. Other then that my budget would be no more then £200 if anyone could point me in the right direction to one around that price range I'd appreciate it x

Have you looked at Kennel/Runs on Ebay. I know budget is an issue for you but you would then get a sheltered area for the hutch and more open area for a run in one go.

I doubt it would be advisable to place a shed etc directly onto grass - we put flags down for our set-up. To save on cost of catflap, runaround etc, may be a pop hole? That's what I have and it works well.

Tbh I want a shed for them rather then build onto Jessie's current hutch as it will provide them with extra space and enable me to spend more time with Faith at her level as she is very wary of me and runs a mile anytime I try and check her over and groom her.

The plan was to buy the shed and then attach Jessie's run to that with the girls alternating between the shed and chicken coop til they get neutered. Once they have been neutered and bonded I then intend to merge the chicken coops run onto Jessie's run and build on that to give them a wide area (at the moment they have free reign of the garden under supervision).

Just need to find a shed that fits within my budget. Being dumb here but what do you mean by flags? And a pop hole I presume is just a hole cut out? X

I've just had a shed built onto grass, they provided concrete bearers for it to stand on. It's a large 8x6ft tongue and groove shed. I'd definitely go for tongue and groove, a lot of the cheaper sheds r overlap which won't last long and there's a good chance bunnies will get their teeth into it! I imagine by pop hole it's just a hole cut in the side if the shed, I've put holes in quite a few things I'm making for my shed, I used the runaround hole as a guide size, I think its 5", looks small but bunnies have no probs with it :thumb: Flags is like a paved area

This is the seller in eBay I got mine from..

seller:andyaatshedscouk2012

Their sheds r listed as seconds, as there's a lot of knot holes, most were filled by them but I had to fill a lot in the floor as I want to paint it. I think they use leftover wood as there's a lot of thinner strips of wood put together in mine but it seems strong and sturdy, I'm really happy with it for the price! I think you're prob in their delivery area but you'd have to check, geography not my strong point!! I use postcode-info.co.uk to check distances :thumb:

If your buns chew don't get overlap, tongue and groove is much better but more expensive. I have a cat flap but only one of mine have ever worked out how to use it! The shed has a hole cut in the side to allow permanent access to walk in run. Shed needs to be off ground for the rain.

I have a 10 x 6 shed on pea gravel and breeze blocks. I have an aivery run fixed on to it and two holes cut out of the side (cat flap size) so that the rabbits can have 24/7 access. I decided to have two holes in case one of them got bossy and blocked the entrance!

Sorry to interrupt, but for those who have sheds on paving slabs/breeze blocks on grass, is there anything under them? I would like to put my kennel/run on paving slabs (patio type ones) on grass but I'm worried it will be too heavy and sink.

Also OP, I've seen garden buildings direct mentioned on here a few times and they seem really reasonably priced. Not sure what the quality is like though, but a few forum users have them I think. Maybe search for posts?

Will be following this thread with interest as I am about to invest in a shed for the buns so really looking forward to ideas and suggestions.

I must admit I was a bit worried (partly why I wouldn't consider a shed before) but the people I got mine from supply concrete bearers specifically to use on grass. I did, however, already have mesh laid out with turf on top as the run was there before, so I decided to leave the mesh down thinking it would be an extra bit of support on the ground. At the moment the shed seems very secure, but only time will tell I suppose! It's only been there a week

Thanks for all the replies. Will definately get tongue and groove as Jessie is a little knawer and is constantly nibbling away at her hutch and run.

Thanks had a look and they aren't too badly priced.

Once I buy a shed what is best to have under to elevate it off the ground? I'm stumped when it comes to anything diy. I know you can buy bases or use breeze blocks but I don't whats best. If anyone has any photos to show me what they have their shed on that would be really helpful :) x

Mine came with concrete bearers, I paid an extra £30 but it was cheaper than having a base put down, I feel like they would be safer than breeze blocks as they will bear the weight more evenly. I'll be posting pics of mine all done up soon so u will be able to get an idea what they're like from them :D

I actually got a second hand shed free from my sister, they come up on freecycle quite a lot. My husband is pretty handy with DIY so I can do this kind of thing. He raised the shed using both blocks bad wooden planks to keep it off the ground to stop it rotting. It is a couple of inches off the ground which is a good thing with the amount of rain we've had!!
Mine has a hole cut in the side for the buns to access their run 24/7, I want to try a cat flap but have never got round to it. The only trouble with a hole is that if it's really windy or rainy the weather gets in so make sure it's positioned at the far end away from their cosy area.
My attached run has mesh laid under the soil/turf to protect from foxes digging in and then I haves second moveable run attached with an old tube I picked up for free... It's just like a run around tube but soooo much cheaper! Similar to these black drainage ones on ebay:

Shed is the best place for bunnies because it means you spend more time in with them during bad weather, gone are the days of crawling in and out of their run!!

The difference with the runaround pipes is that they're ridged on the inside aswell so that the bunnies can grip, allowing them to be used at different angles. If it was just a level pipe connection then these would be fine, although I would feel a bit queasy using 'used' drainage pipes

Not sure you entirely got the Kennel/Run idea - it is not something you would build onto your existing hutch. Just in case your not sure what they look like, here is a link to a thread with some good ideas - my Kennel/Run is post number 4 :)
