Rescue rabbits help

New Kit
Hi I recently rescued two rabbits from a lady who said she needed to rehome but did not give her reasons. When I went to collect, she told me that they were both actually not neutered and were living together for 2 years, the girl was pregnant by about a month. Male and female. I was happy to take them as I didn’t want them going through that, separated and I’ve got the boy castrated within a few days of collecting him. She used them as a breeding pair. She has since messaged me asking how they are and misses them, but when I asked her how pregnant she thought she was again, she said the doe only had babies about a month ago. I don’t know any signs of rabbit pregnancy etc as I didn’t expect this. Can anyone give me any help? She hasn’t started building a nest but is doing a lot of digging. She’s eating more. I’ve seen little jerks in her belly. When do you think she will give birth so I can alert my vet?

Hello & welcome to RU. Thank goodness you got them out & well done on getting the boy neutered already (he will be fertile still for up to 8 weeks). I'm worried for the kits if they left mum already :(, poor mites. Does can get pregnant hours after giving birth so unfortunately it is likely she is pregnant again. The average gestation is around 31 days so it could well be happening soon. The little jerks in her belly & increased appetite are signs.

There is a sticky on here about advice when your bun has an unexpected litter - I shall try to find & link it for you to read.
I think in your shoes I'd call the vet & explain what you have here. Rabbit mums are quite paws off I've read, they nurse 1-2 times daily & outside that leave their kits in the nest for the large part.

I hope everything goes ok for the rabbits & you

I can't help as regards pregnancy but am so glad you took them both in. I wish your pair and the expected kits all the best. Sending vibes that her birth goes well
