• Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Henry at vets again - Henry has sadly gone- U/D 6am thread page 20

This may be a ridiculous question, but the Vet(s) are absolutely certain that Henry does not have Dental problems are they ? I apologise for not being able to remember if Henry has had a Dental under GA ?

Re Lillian's urinating- a one off I would not be overly concerned about. But given her history of Bladder problems I would get the Vet's advice should Lillian keep showing the same behaviour.

Good point re the dental. Even if they did check his teeth previously as he’s not eaten hay whilst in stasis they may have developed spurs etc.

Topping up the vibes and hugs xx

I hope you get a positive update from the vet. I agree, with Henry as he is, you will need to make sure that it's not a problem with his teeth. Also I would question what the blood test results were, as they could indicate a reason why he is still not wanting to eat.

Sending lots of vibes for them both.

8:30am update. This is a mixture of news - some positive, some not so.
Frankly I’m not sure I can emotionally take much more. I have spoken to the vet nurse looking after Henry - she has a real soft spot for him. The good news- he is producing loads of poops and has found an appetite for hay. That’s a new one on me. He doesn’t seem to want pellets - and I suppose that’s no bad thing really as he should just eat mostly hay. They’ve tried him on greens but he’s not really eating those much either. But hay is good. Poop is good.
Now for the not so good. He’s decided he doesn’t like the ear catheter and has been ‘Henry-ising’ it and somehow removing it. That’s obviously not great and despite their best efforts, Henry doesn’t agree so he’s now in a collar of shame! As you can imagine, Henry is even less pleased at this medieval contraption and it’s cramping his style and making him look stoopid to all the other pets in hospital and he has an image to maintain. So he’s not a happy bunny.
Now the really bad- Henry is still very damp underneath and they are concerned about skin issues and more pressing, incontenance. They don’t know if this is just due to Henry sitting in his ‘kennel’ all the time or if he has some other issue going on, like incontenance. He’s always been dry - never had any problems, and the X-ray didn’t show any blockages. We’ve already had him on Sulfratrim and other abx and now his tummy is moving again, I can’t see them wanting to go with more abx. So this is now the primary issue. Vet due in at 10 so I’ll know more when she calls.
I’m just drained and confused now. I’ve no idea what is effecting Henry like this.
Lillian is really missing Henry now and was kicking down the living room door this morning when I came downstairs- she was so keen to get into the room and look for Henry. I’ve no idea if he’ll be sent home today or if they will keep him in.
I will update you all at lunchtime when I’ve stopped crying.

Lovely to hear of the hay munching & poop piles - go Henry. I'd ask where they get their hay . Naughty Henry remodelling his catheter though - it surprises me more bunnies don't do this though you do hear of it frequently. I hope its the case he just sat in some wee. Is his kidney function ok? xx

Yes, great news and a good idea to find out their hay source if he likes it.

Great news on the poop and hay eating front. I'm going to take a punt and say that the hay they're giving him is the oxbow timothy hay. Only because all the vet's I've gone to use that one!

Hopefully the wetness is as J&B suggests and that it's just from where he's been sitting in his wee. However since he's staying in at the vet's there is currently a golden opportunity for the vet to take a urine example to test for infection.

This and I'd put some pressure on getting those blood test results back XX

Yes I agree, have they tested his urine at all yet?

Maybe if he isn't coming home, Lillian would like to stay with him too?

I'm so glad there's poops though, that's really good news :)

Piles of poo and eating hay is a wonderful update. Pee is also good. I agree they should test his urine.
Henry sounds like a lovely bunny stealing the hearts of his nurses.
Sending more vibes.

Ok Henry fans - here’s your 3pm update. You ready?
Vet just rang (I’ve been on tenterhooks). Situation same as previous but here’s what the vet thinks:
She can feel cecotrophs in his tummy so she is happy this is working. She thinks the dampness is not urine (that would make sense) because....she thinks it’s from the soft cecotroph material causing Henry rash/burn. We can manage that!
He has been seriously poorly - I feel worse than worse can be because I let him deteriorate.
Anyhoo, they are running bloods now to cover the bases (I thought that had been done but it’s happening now).
They will discharge Henry tonight- 7pm.
I’ve got to wang fibreplex into him as he’s producing soft cecotrophs and flamzene on his poorly anal area and give panacur as well.
He is to go back tomorrow for a full follow up and to monitor the cecotroph situation.
I know a hefty floof monster who is going to be sooper excited in 4 hours time.
And I will be also. Can’t lie- I’m crying again and wished Henry hadn’t reached this stage but I feel the vets have been great.
But the biggest thanks I have is for each and every single one of you who has supported me and more so Henry and given us your energy and positive thoughts and vibes.
You are all wonderful.
Will post when Henry home later.

Well it is sounding as though his cecum motility may have been the primary problem. I do hope that the blood test results are OK and that once home Henry's recovery will continue x

I'm glad that Henry can be discharged this evening. Did the vets do any other diagnostics when he was first admitted then apart from the xray? I'm pleased that they are now checking his blood anyway.

I'm also pleased that he is to go on Panacur as I have been wondering today whether EC could be at the bottom of all this, especially in view of his undiagnosed paw issue a few months back. I guess Lillian will also be treated with Panacur? It obviously makes less sense if the wetness is not urine. It will also be interesting to check his renal function in the bloods though. It's also a case of me just thinking things through and might be utter tosh!

However, it's very good that the vet feels he is well enough to come home :)

Sounds promising,I hope he improves further, topping up vibes for him and hugs for you.You haven't let him down at all, stop beating yourself up.xx

No Omi - I would rather you did think things through thoroughly and throw every option at me. It's how I learn. I'll see what the vet says tonight and await the full results.
Not sure about EC although bloods should show up any abnormalities.
I am always so very grateful for your input Omi. Bless you. xx
