Growing Grass........

Radish

Mama Doe
I know this is a Rabbit Forum but I'm in need of some advice regarding growing some grass for Guinea Pigs to eat.

I will be collecting two little pigs next weekend and have bought everything I can think of from beds to hutches and cages etc and was discussing position of hutch when he remarked thsat since we have no grass in the garden couldn't i grow some grass in seed trays for the pigs?

I have no idea if this is viable or not? If it is possible to grow grass in seed trays have any of you done it? can you grow much? does it grow fast? and what do you grow it in? peat? potting compost? what sort of stuff? how much would they eat?

Any advice would be much appreciated as I don't really know where else to ask.

many thanks.

I got a roll of turf from B n Q and put it in trays and an old cage bottom on new compost. They can eat a tray down to the roots in one day so you need to do quite a few to have some regrowing while they eat others.
Just put them back outside to regrow and water in dry weather as they do dry out quickly.
You can grow from grass seed but it takes too long for me :D

Growing grass

I grow grass in a trays for my rabbit. He absolutely loves it. I use general purpose compost and seeds I bought from Amazon. It usually takes about four days for the first grass to start appearing and then whoosh it grows so fast. Just fill the tray to three quarters full, then put loads of seeds on top of the compost, then cover with a really thin layer of more compost and hey presto! In about a week to ten days you have some lovely grass for your guinea pig! My rabbit got a dicky tummy to begin with so maybe limit the amount at first. Then unlimited access is fine.

Good luck

:D
