Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Encephalitozoon cuniculi (EC) Blood test

Hi. I'm new to this illness/virus and would really like some opinions please.

I had a confirmed diagnosis using a blood test that my 1 year old rabbit had an active EC back in April 2024. Apart from the head tilt that she developed with EC which has now completely gone, thankfully, she shows no signs of EC. I want to bond her with another young rabbit but I'm not sure whether I should get her blood tested again before bonding. Mainly because, from what my vet has told me, EC can be there one day and not the next, making the blood test seem like a moment in time test which is not a cheap test and not stress-free for my rabbit.

Any thoughts or past experiences please.

I would speak with the Vet about giving your Rabbit another course of Fenbendazole (Panacur) prior to bonding. If she is currently asymptomatic then a blood test will only show evidence of previous exposure to the parasite. Even if EC titres were found to be low when the blood was taken it wouldn’t guarantee that she won’t pass EC on to the other Rabbit. And the other Rabbit might already have been exposed to EC anyway, over 50% of Pet Rabbits have been. But they don’t all become symptomatic.
In short, what I would do is just a 28 day course of Panacur prior to bonding. I would not have her blood tested again.

Always speak with your Vet first before giving Panacur 😀
