  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can anyone tell me how to work out dog loxicom dosages for weight?

They haven't even clipped his bum, after they told me they had [emoji849]

Honestly don't know what to do about vets anymore... My exotic specialist never has any appointments, or any emergency on the day ones... And this vet is terrible too...

This really upsets me with vets, I appreciate they can be very busy but you just can't turn away an emergency :( The vets I work isn't an specialist but we're taught what's an emergency across all species, even then if it's not a true emergency (pet will/may die without urgent treatment) a way should also be found to book in urgent (painful/conditions which will worsen etc) conditions as well :(

Yea it's not great, I mean twice this week I've had an emergency and they've said both times, to go somewhere else and that they can't see them :( Idk what to do tbh

I get how stressful this is. I'd start by writing to the practice manager (of the exotics specialist) detailing when you've asked for an appointment, what their response was & whats wrong with bunny. Throw it back at them, what do they advise? Maybe they work alongside some vets they can recommend. Its really tough :(

Yea maybe, thing is they asked my Vet, and they said I should take Clementine somewhere else too (this was Monday)

Idk who the practice manager is, they just say another vets, no suggestions :( I might have to complain though because it's getting really tough to get vet care at my vets.. Like they're my standard, normal vets.. :(

meloxicam

I know this is cheeky and people won't wanna say.. But Idk what to do, I'm taking Atticus to a vet, but I know he'll get the wrong dosage prescribed and he can't have vetergesic because of the reaction he had to it.. And my normal vet was too busy again to see him as an emergency... And I just know they'll weigh him and say yeaa give him 3kg worth of the cat metacam [emoji21][emoji21][emoji21][emoji21]

If I can get a dose, I'll talk to the vet about it and make sure they're happy, I'm just worried that we'll end up in a bad situation :(

dear graciee,-- according to http://www.medirabbit.com the dosages for analgesics drugs-[meloxicam]-0.3-0.6MG/KG-written as,but understood as , 300-600 micrograms[MRRG]-not milligrams..-per KG-[WEIGHT],--just wanted to be clear.--definitely do not want to over medicate [atticus-3kg:love:],-health hazard..--only-in severe pain maximum dosage is up to 1.5mg/kg.-given-[orally,]sc,im--sid/bid--means once a day-or twice a day..--if I remember correctly metacam,meloxicam-half life is 24 hours.-I sure hope this info helps.--sincerely james waller from the other kent-usa:love::wave:

This is exactly my view. My vet isn't a specialist, but a very good vet. I have never had an occasion where I have phoned and said it's an emergency, when they haven't said to come in immediately. What do they do with other types of pets e.g. a dog which has been involved in a car accident?

I have two x 2.something kg bunnies that are on 1ml twice daily with the option to go up to 2ml twice daily if required. My (exotics) vet told me recently that there has been some new research released in regards to long term, high dose pain relief (metacam) being used for up to a number of years. Basically, it had absolutely zero ill effects on the bunnies being monitored. I always use the dose I feel is appropriate for what I’m dealing with, and my vets are happy for me to do so. Good luck x
